Unang tanong na pumasok sa isip ko: Is this newsworthy?
At first, akala ko hindi. Marami namang players ang hindi nadraft. Pero then again, si Xyza Gula ’yan.
The strongest framing is usually:
• Who the athlete is
• Why readers should care
• What happened
Kaya newsworthy siya for Thomasians—not simply because she went undrafted, but because of who she is and what she meant to the UST community.
A possible framing could have been:
“After playing a key role in UST’s recent UAAP campaign, Xyza Gula enters PVL free agency after going undrafted in the 2026 PVL Draft.”
It doesn’t hide the fact that she went undrafted. The difference is that it doesn’t make “went undrafted” the entirety of the story.
The original caption was factual, and I don’t think the issue is accuracy. I just think there was room to provide more context about an athlete who played a significant role in UST’s recent success. That wouldn’t compromise the truth—it would simply tell a fuller story.
I’ve always defended The Varsitarian’s pursuit of truthful and factual reporting. Journalism is not supposed to bend facts to protect feelings, and the caption was factually correct.
That said, I understand why some fans and players were disappointed by the framing. If this were just any other undrafted player, I probably wouldn’t think twice about it. But this is Xyza Gula, a player who was instrumental to UST’s UAAP campaign and someone who has meant a lot to the community.
A school publication is not obligated to put a positive spin on every story. However, I do think there was room to provide more context and recognize the athlete’s contributions while still reporting the same fact. Doing so would not have compromised journalistic integrity; it would have added nuance and dignity to the story.
Among the notable snubs in the 2026 PVL Rookie Draft were outside hitters Joan Monares (UP) and Xyza Gula (UST).
Other UAAP players who missed the cut were Kayce Balingit (UE), Taks Fujimoto (Ateneo), Heart Magsombol (UP), Sophia Sindayen (La Salle) and Florize Papa (FEU).
I'm exhausted and overwhelmed, but I haven't given up.
If you are able to help in any way, no matter how small, I would be deeply grateful. If you cannot donate, sharing this post would mean so much to me.
