Donald Trump has repeatedly and publicly condemned Mitch McConnell multiple times since his June 2020 endorsement.
Their relationship deteriorated sharply after the 2020 election and January 6, 2021, Capitol attack (which McConnell blamed on Trump). Trump responded with personal attacks that have continued for years, even after McConnell endorsed him in 2024 and stepped down as Senate Republican leader.
Here are key documented examples:
February 2021 (just weeks after leaving office): Trump released a statement calling McConnell a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” and warned that Republicans would never win again if they stuck with him. He added that McConnell “will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country.”
April 2021: Trump called McConnell a “dumb son of a bitch,” adding, “I hired his wife. Did he ever say thank you?” He has also repeatedly nicknamed him “Old Crow” or “Broken Old Crow.”
October 2022: Trump posted on Truth Social that McConnell has a “DEATH WISH” for supporting certain Democratic-backed legislation, accusing him of hating Trump and working against his interests.
February 2025 (during Trump’s second term): After McConnell voted against several Trump cabinet nominees (including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for HHS), Trump publicly said he “feel[s] sorry for Mitch… He’s not equipped mentally” and claimed he was the one who forced McConnell to drop out of leadership.
As recently as May 2026: Trump demanded the firing of a McConnell staffer, calling out McConnell’s team and continuing the public criticism.
Trump has kept up these attacks in personal terms even while McConnell remained in the Senate (his term ends in 2026, and he announced he would not seek re-election). McConnell has privately called Trump far worse names (e.g., “despicable human being,” “stupid,” “narcissist”), but he has largely avoided public responses to Trump’s insults.
In short, the 2020 endorsement was followed by years of open hostility from Trump toward McConnell.
@BaronDestructo I am so pissed right now I can't watch any more of these videos. I watched David's 15 minute video yesterday and it was all I could take for the time being. So please Joe, if a real development takes place (that you can talk about, of course) let us know here on X.
