Restaurants added softer lighting, comfortable seating, and neutral colors to appeal to adults who still enjoy McDonald’s food but prefer a modern rather than child-focused setting.

Architects note that most fast food buildings today look similar: flat roofs, boxy shapes, exposed lighting, and steel accents. This “Chipotle-fication” favors efficiency over personality. It also erases the roadside-attraction feel that once made McDonald’s instantly recognizable to travelers zooming past at highway speeds.
