In 1987, Kikuyus and Luos agreed to settle their differences the mature way through a drinking competition.

One week before the showdown, the Kikuyu delegation sent Mwaniki wa Njoroge to Kisumu to confirm logistics. Just a polite visit.

Upon arrival, the Luos, proud and confident, brought out their strongest homebrew, 20 litres of Ko’ngo, a drink so potent it’s basically fermented witchcraft. They told Mwaniki, “Taste a little, just to know what’s coming.”

Mwaniki smiled, grabbed the mtungi with both hands, and downed all 20 litres in one go, no blinking, no breathing.

Everyone stood frozen.

Ko’ngo had taken down warriors, fishermen, even an MCA. Nobody had ever done more than 2 litres and lived to talk properly.

They stared at Mwaniki, stunned, and asked:

“Are you among the competitors?”

He wiped his mouth, belched like thunder, and said:

“Me? Nooo! I didn’t even qualify…”

Competition was cancelled. To this day, Luos call that week ‘The Great Humbling’. 😂🍻💀
