#Somaliland: A Beacon of Stability, Progress and Democratic Resilience Celebrates 34 Golden Years.

On May 18, the Republic of Somaliland will mark the 34th anniversary of reclaiming its independence from Somalia—a significant milestone that highlights its enduring commitment to peace, democratic governance, and state-building.

In 1991, following years of brutal repression under the regime of Siad Barre, Somaliland’s traditional elders, political leaders, and civil society convened in the city of Burco and unanimously declared the restoration of the country’s sovereignty. This pivotal moment came three decades after Somaliland first gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, and four days before it entered into an ill fated union with Italian #Somalia that quickly descended into disappointment, marginalization, and eventually civil war and genocide.

“The people of Somaliland have long viewed the 1960 unification as a betrayal,” said Mohamed Ibrahim, a 62-year-old resident of Hargeisa. “What followed was decades of political exclusion, economic neglect, theft and ultimately, indiscriminate violence.”

One of the darkest chapters in Somaliland’s history came in 1988, when government forces carried out mass killings and aerial bombardment of major Somaliland cities.

The trauma of that era remains etched in the national consciousness and fuels the determination to preserve the hard-won peace and autonomy.

Since reasserting its independence in 1991, Somaliland has quietly defied the odds. It has established a functioning democratic system, held multiple peaceful elections, and built robust public institutions—all without formal international recognition or much help.

Today, it is hailed as one of the most stable and democratic nations in Africa.

"Over the past three decades, Somaliland has emerged as a regional leader in democratic governance and stability," said Ahmed-Yasin Sheikh Ali Ayanle, Somaliland’s Minister of Information and government spokesperson. "This year’s celebration is not only a commemoration of our past but a call to the world to recognize our rightful place among the community of nations."

Across Somaliland, preparations for the May 18 celebrations are in full swing. National flags adorn streets and buildings, and schoolchildren proudly wear clothes sewn from the national colors. In Hargeisa and other cities, citizens are expected to participate in parades and cultural events that showcase national pride and resilience.

More than 75 percent of Somaliland’s population is under the age of 30, a generation born and raised under the Somaliland constitution and flag, and therefore are deeply invested in its future.

Presidential Spokesperson Hussein Adan Egeh (Deyr) added that the diaspora, who play a key role in amplifying Somaliland’s voice globally, will also join the celebration with celebratory events planned in over 70 cities across the globe.

Somaliland's leadership continues to emphasize its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden as a valuable asset in global security and trade. The government has openly called on the United States and other partners to explore stronger diplomatic and security ties, including the potential establishment of a military presence in the deep-water port of Berbera.

Despite lacking international recognition, Somaliland has fulfilled every criterion of statehood: defined borders, a permanent population, a functioning government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. It stands today as a case study in what homegrown peace-building and democratic resilience can achieve in a volatile region.

As Somaliland marks 34 years of self-rule, it sends a clear and dignified message to the world: recognition is not a gift—it is a right earned through sacrifice, vision, and determination.

President of the Republic of #Somaliland Launches the National Day of Public Solidarity

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), today officially declared May 10th as the National Day of Public Solidarity—a day that will be commemorated annually across the country.

In a speech delivered at the launch event, the President stated:

“The National Day of Public Solidarity will be a day dedicated to promoting and strengthening community-based support programs, compassion, assistance to the needy, and public awareness of the value of solidarity.”

The President emphasized that the day will encourage the people of Somaliland to give charity and zakat, and to establish reliable sources of support for the poor—so that, as a nation, we fulfill our collective duty to assist the vulnerable and uphold social justice.

Explaining why the event was held at the Orphan and Child Welfare Center, the President said:

“This year, we chose the Orphanage as the venue for launching this program to remind us all of our shared responsibility to care for orphans and to ensure they receive meaningful and ongoing support.”

On this occasion, the President also announced the establishment of the National Orphan Welfare Fund, with the government pledging an initial contribution of $100,000 USD.

He further underlined his personal commitment as President to guaranteeing education, healthcare, livelihood, and job opportunities for the children cared for in national orphan and welfare institutions.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), officially opened the National Cultural Conference today at Mansoor Hotel in Hargeisa. The two-day forum marks the first cultural gathering of its kind at the national level in Somaliland’s history.

Organized by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Awareness, under the leadership of Sheikh Ahmed-Yasin Sheikh Ali Ayanle, the conference aims to explore and promote Somaliland’s rich cultural heritage. According to the Somaliland News Agency (SOLNA), the event represents a significant milestone in preserving and understanding the values, traditions, and identity of the nation.

In his opening address, President Irro delivered a comprehensive speech, emphasizing the importance of culture as the cornerstone of national identity and continuity.

“Culture is the soul of a people’s existence. It is the foundation of our lineage and the mirror of our collective identity. It is the thread that binds us to past generations, ensuring continuity. It guides our values, our behavior, and our faith,” the President stated.

He further highlighted the authenticity and indigenous nature of Somaliland’s culture, describing it as deeply rooted in pastoralist traditions, Islamic values, and a historical narrative passed down through generations.

“Our culture is not imported, as is the case in some societies. It is an indigenous heritage shaped by our nomadic way of life, our Islamic belief system, and the lived experiences of our ancestors over thousands of years,” he said.

The President also paid tribute to the moral depth and intellectual richness embedded in Somaliland’s oral traditions, particularly poetry, which he credited for preserving the Somali language and cultural knowledge.

“Our culture is distinguished by its reverence for honor, discipline, and deep knowledge. Language — especially the poetry handed down by our forefathers — has been the main vessel through which this richness has endured.”

The conference will focus on nine key thematic areas:
1.The importance of culture and heritage
2.Marriage and cultural traditions
3.Clanism and social exclusion
4.Modernity and cultural transformation
5.Customary justice and cultural norms
6.Language and oral literature
7.Livestock, agriculture, and communal hospitality

1. #Somaliland Withdraws from Talks with #Somalia

The Government of the Republic of #Somaliland has officially announced its withdrawal from all negotiations with Somalia. The decision was taken in defense of Somaliland’s sovereignty, stability, and national interests. Presidential Spokesperson Hussein Aden Igeh (Deyr), in a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) and translated by SOLNA, noted that while there was a genuine intention to reach a productive outcome, the Somali government failed to engage meaningfully on key issues. As a result, no tangible progress was made, prompting Somaliland to exit the dialogue process.

2. Cabinet Condemns Somali Prime Minister’s Provocative Visit to Las Anod

During its recent session at the Presidential Palace, the Council of Ministers strongly condemned the April 12 visit by the Prime Minister of Somalia to the city of Las Anod. The Cabinet described the move as a provocative act and a violation of international norms and Somaliland’s territorial sovereignty. The Council unanimously resolved to terminate all ongoing dialogue with the Government of Somalia.

3. Government Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Sovereignty

In line with its peacebuilding policy for Eastern Sool, the Somaliland Government reaffirmed its commitment to peace, first declared during the President’s inauguration on December 12, 2024. STATEMENT FROM THE REPUBLIC OF #SOMALILAND
April 16, 2025

The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Somaliland, in its session held on April 16, 2025, and chaired by the President of the Republic, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) strongly condemned the provocative and unlawful visit by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government of #Somalia to the city of Las Anod on April 12, 2025. This action constitutes a blatant violation of international law and an infringement on the territorial sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland.

In line with its peace initiative for the Eastern Sool region, the Government of Somaliland had previously issued a peace declaration on December 12, 2024—the day the current President assumed office. Today, the government reaffirms that peace remains its top priority, while the defense of Somaliland’s sovereignty is an uncompromising red line.

Following the conclusion of this session, the cabinet released the following articles:

Article 1 – Somalia’s Rejection of Dialogue and Peace:

The Federal Government of Somalia has unambiguously abandoned the path of peaceful coexistence and dialogue. The Prime Minister’s visit to Las Anod was a calculated provocation and a direct violation of Somaliland’s territorial integrity.

This act represents a dangerous political escalation and a deliberate incitement to conflict, threatening the broader stability of the Horn of Africa. It also constitutes a breach of international norms and the unlawful abduction of Somaliland citizens.

Article 2 – No Negotiations Regarding Detainee Release:

The Government of Somaliland makes it unequivocally clear that no discussions or negotiations have taken place with the Government of Somalia regarding the release of detainees.

The individuals transferred to Mogadishu by Somalia’s Prime Minister are not recognized as prisoners of war.

This action is viewed as a political maneuver to distract from the internal failures of the Somali government.

Article 3 – International Cooperation on Prisoner Affairs and #ICRC Involvement:

The Government of Somaliland has engaged with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the diplomatic missions of friendly nations to address the detainee situation in accordance with international laws and standards.

Somaliland remains open to a lawful prisoner exchange process, under the facilitation of the ICRC, and has held prior discussions on this matter with international partners including the United States, United Kingdom, #Denmark, #Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

Article 4 – Appeal to the International Community:

The Government of Somaliland calls on the international community to urgently address the violations being committed by Somalia in the Eastern Sool region. We ask for support in our efforts to restore peace and stability in the area.

Somalia’s deliberate aggression against Somaliland is a threat to the wider Horn of Africa. It creates opportunities for extremist and terrorist groups, posing a serious risk to regional peace and development.

Article 5 – Termination of all Dialogue with Somalia:

Given Somalia’s continued and deliberate violations against the Republic of #Somaliland, as well as its disregard for the principles of previous negotiations, the Council of Ministers has resolved to formally withdraw from all ongoing dialogue with Somalia, effective April 16, 2025.

Somaliland remains firmly committed to defending its sovereignty and independence—without compromise.

1.The 15th session of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of #Somaliland, chaired by the President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), was held at the Presidential Palace. The meeting focused on key national issues, including economic development, security, and social infrastructure.

2.President Irro hosted an honorary dinner at the Presidential Palace for poets, artists, and various representatives of Somaliland’s cultural community.

3.The President met with the outgoing Head of the UK Office in Hargeisa, Mr. Ilyaas Malek, as well as the newly appointed Head, Ms. Louise Hancock, along with other British officials.

4.President Irro held a high-level meeting with Mr. George Conway, the United Nations’ top humanitarian official and Deputy Assistant Secretary-General. The President also received a delegation led by Mr. Conway, which included Mr. Blaise Kabongo Mujika, Head of UN OCHA in Somaliland, and other senior UN officials.

5.The President hosted a luncheon at the Presidential Palace for prominent business leaders from across Somaliland to strengthen government-private sector collaboration.

6.Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi and his delegation, during a working tour of the Sanaag region, held a meeting in El-Afweyn with traditional leaders, intellectuals, and businesspeople from the regions of Togdheer, Sanaag, Saaxil, and Saraar.

7.The Vice President and his delegation participated in a large ceremony in the Tuurka area of Gar-Adag District, where a new Civil Defense Force and their military vehicles were formally inducted into service.

8.During the same tour, the Vice President also officiated the commissioning of the new Civil Defense Force stationed in Gar-Adag District, along with their equipment.

9.The Minister of Defense and the Commander of the National Army emphasized that the ongoing military registration campaign is a national duty mandated by the government. They urged all members of the armed forces to take advantage of this initiative, which enhances their rights and welfare.

10.The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdirahman Dahir Adan, received a warm reception upon his arrival in Bloomington, Minnesota, during his official visit to the United States.

11.The Minister of Interior and Security Abdalle Mohamed Arab, accompanied by the Director General of the Ministry and senior police officers, held an important meeting with Mr. George Conway, the UN’s senior humanitarian coordinator and Deputy Assistant Secretary-General.

12.A delegation led by the Minister of Education, Science, and Early Development, Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf, conducted a working visit to the eastern regions to assess the security situation in the districts under Saraar and Sanaag.

13.The Government of Somaliland issued an official statement condemning the planned visit of the Somali Prime Minister to the city of Lasanod. The government held the Federal Government of Somalia responsible for any consequences resulting from its continued provocation against Somaliland.

14.The Minister of Information, Culture, and Awareness — and official government spokesperson — Mr. Ahmed-Yasin Sheikh Ali Ayanle, held a press conference criticizing the Somali Prime Minister’s intended visit to Lasanod, describing it as a deliberate provocation.

15.Minister Ayanle also held a meeting with cultural stakeholders in preparation for the upcoming Somaliland National Cultural Conference, which will be held in Hargeisa from April 22 to 23.

16.The Governor of the Central Bank of Somaliland, Mr. Abdinassir Ahmed Hirsi, currently on a working visit to Nairobi, #Kenya, visited the Somaliland Embassy there as part of his official engagements.

#Somaliland Minister of Information Condemns Planned Visit by #Mogadishu Prime Minister to Las Anod

Hargeisa – The Minister of Information and Public Guidance of the Republic of #Somaliland Sheikh Ahmed-yasin Sheikh Ali Ayanle, has issued a firm condemnation of the Mogadishu Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre’s announced plans to visit Las Anod, a region that lies unequivocally within the sovereign territory of the Republic of Somaliland.

Speaking at a press briefing earlier today, the Minister described the move as a reckless provocation designed to inflame tensions and disrupt regional stability. While reaffirming that the visit poses no threat to Somaliland’s sovereignty or territorial integrity, he underscored the seriousness of the political implications.

“We view this declaration not only as an unlawful incursion but also as a calculated attempt to incite division and conflict. Such actions are wholly unacceptable,” said Minister Yasin.

He warned that the Republic of Somaliland would not tolerate interference in its internal affairs and would take all necessary steps to defend its national interests. “The instability being deliberately provoked by Hamse will be met with resolve and with strategic countermeasures. We have conveyed our concerns to the international community and to our regional partners, making it clear that his actions jeopardize peace and do nothing to advance the well-being of the people in this region,” he continued.

Minister Ahmed-yasin questioned the motives behind the visit, suggesting he aims to seed discord and instability, and would best be served instead, if Hamse could address the fragmentation and unrest within the territories he claims to govern. “If he is sincere about national unity as he claimed, let him first establish credible control over Puntland and Jubaland, where authority is tenuous and heavily dependent on foreign military protection based in Halane. That is where his immediate responsibilities lie.”

He further accused Hamse of using the visit to Las Anod as a political gambit to manipulate local sentiment and engineer instability for short-term political gain. “This is not a mission of peace or reconciliation—it is a calculated attempt to deceive communities, impose an illegitimate political process, and fuel further bloodshed. We urge the people of Las Anod and the broader region to see through this ploy.”

Minister Yasin’s remarks follow public statements by Hamse confirming his intent to travel to Las Anod, a move that has sparked widespread concern and condemnation within Somaliland.
