Let’s build the future of data science together!
Today I had the honor of speaking at @PydataKampala about a topic I'm incredibly passionate about: Building Africa, One Open AI Tool at a Time.
For anyone who couldn't make it, my core message was this: The future of technology on our continent won't be downloaded; it will be built, by us, for us. The era of waiting for permission or expensive tools is over.
The open-source revolution, powered by the Python ecosystem, has democratized access to world-class AI. It's time to shift our focus from building the low-level "plumbing" to creating real-world business value.
My talk centered on 5 key pillars for this new era:
1. Democratizing Tech: Open tools like Hugging Face, PyTorch, and TensorFlow mean a developer in Kampala has access to the same power as one in Silicon Valley. The barrier is no longer capital; it's curiosity.
2. Solving Real Problems: We're already seeing AI make a huge impact in Uganda's core sectors—from computer vision diagnosing cassava diseases in agriculture to AI augmenting doctors in healthcare.
3. Fueling Entrepreneurship: Lower technical hurdles mean our startups can go from idea to prototype faster than ever, creating uniquely Ugandan solutions for the market.
4. Bridging the Skills Gap: The talent is right here. Our biggest task is to foster a community of mentorship and continuous learning to empower the next wave of innovators.
5. Building Ethically: We have a golden opportunity to build AI that reflects our values, creating fair and context-aware systems from the ground up.
The energy in the room was incredible, and it solidified my belief that Kampala is a rising hub of innovation. The conversation doesn't stop here. What are your thoughts on the future of AI in Uganda?

Curely AI Research Update
We're training a deep learning radiology model to detect diseases from chest X-rays—starting with TB.
It identifies abnormalities, localizes them, and provides diagnostic confidence scores to support clinicians.
