MERKEL SAID “WIR SCHAFFEN DAS.” EUROPE IS STILL LIVING WITH THE CONSEQUENCES.

One person is dead. At least sixteen others have been injured. Once again, the scene is Berlin.

A van has driven into crowds celebrating Pride. German police are looking for a 21-year-old suspect with known links to an Islamist milieu. The investigation is still ongoing, and the motive has not yet been officially established. That matters, and we should wait for the final conclusions.

But there is another truth that cannot be ignored.

In 2015, Angela Merkel told Europe, “Wir schaffen das”—we can do this.

More than a decade later, it is painfully obvious that Europe did not.

For years, ordinary Europeans have been asked to accept the consequences of political decisions they never voted for: uncontrolled migration, parallel societies, rising insecurity and the growing influence of Islamist extremism. Meanwhile, anyone who questioned the direction of travel was too often dismissed as intolerant or extremist.

The result is impossible to ignore.

Paris and the Bataclan. Brussels. Nice. The Berlin Christmas Market. Westminster. London Bridge. Manchester. Stockholm. Barcelona. Strasbourg. Vienna. Brussels again. Mannheim. Solingen. And now Berlin again.

This is not to suggest that every attacker arrived during the migration wave of 2015. They did not. But together these attacks tell the story of a political class that consistently underestimated the risks, ignored warning signs and refused to admit when its policies had failed.

After every attack, the pattern is the same.
Expressions of shock. Flowers. Candles.
Promises that lessons will be learned.

And then life in European politics simply returns to business as usual.

Thankfully, some countries are beginning to rethink their approach.

Sweden has tightened the conditions for residence permits, making it easier to refuse or revoke them in cases involving crime, fraud or links to extremist groups.

Austria has banned Muslim headscarves for schoolgirls.

Belgium has strengthened the possibility of revoking citizenship acquired through naturalisation for people convicted of the most serious crimes.

These measures will not solve every problem. But they recognise something many European leaders have been reluctant to admit: a nation has both the right and the duty to protect its citizens.

Living in Europe should be a privilege, not an automatic entitlement.

Those who commit serious crimes, embrace extremism or reject the basic values of the societies that welcomed them should not expect to remain.

Europe cannot afford another decade of denial. We should not wait for the next truck.
The next knife. Or the next memorial.

It is time to act.

As a Dane and a father, I find it unacceptable that repeated violent behavior and personal attacks did not lead to decisive action.

Those responsible for protecting the public should explain why this individual was not removed from the country or otherwise prevented from causing further harm. May the Swedish victim rest in peace.
