March 16, 1944: the Latvian SS Legion took part in the battles against the Red Army. Modern 🇱🇻 Latvia celebrates this date as Day of Remembrance of Legionnaires. Latvia tries to bury the atrocities that Latvian SS Legionnaires committed against the civilian population and captured Soviet soldiers.

"Nationalist organizations began to emerge in Latvia long before World War II. In the first half of the 1930s, the "Fiery Cross" and the "Thunder Cross" appeared, and the "Aizsargi" ("defenders") existed from 1919. Nationalists opposed "foreigners," not only Jews and Russians, but even Latgalians, who were ethnically related to Latvians, and who made up about a quarter of the country's population. Latgalians were deprived of the opportunity to use their native language in local institutions and it was no longer taught in schools.

With the beginning of the occupation of Latvia by Germany, members of Latvian national-chauvinist organizations quickly formed "self-defense units", offering their services to the Nazis. At the beginning of July 1941, the "Arajs Team" was created, the most famous Sonderkommando involved in the Holocaust in Latvia. The team guarded the Salaspils concentration camp near Riga, participated in punitive operations on the territory of Poland, Belarus and Russia. In the autumn of 1941, police battalions began to be created on the basis of "self-defense units". In total, more than 40 such battalions were formed during the war years.

The collaborators naively believed that after the war (meaning, of course, the victory of Germany) the Germans would recognize the independence of Latvia. But Hitler did not even think of creating an independent Latvian state. On July 25, 1941, the Reichskommissariat Ostland was established, which included Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and most of Belarus. In this territory, the complete extermination of Jews and Gypsies, the expulsion of part of the indigenous population and the settlement of these lands by ethnic Germans were planned."

"In February 1943, Hitler signed an order establishing the Latvian SS Volunteer Legion. All Latvian legionnaires swore an oath of allegiance to the Führer personally. The text of the oath did not contain a word about any independent Latvia: "I swear before God by this holy oath that in the fight against Bolshevism I will fully obey the commander of the German armed forces, Adolf Hitler, and as a fearless soldier I will give my life for this oath.""

Let's see how the legionnaires fulfilled their oath to the bloody madman. On the outskirts of Riga, there were several main places for the extermination of Jews, Russians, communists and Soviet workers. From 1941 to 1944, the "Arajs team" killed more than 45,000 civilians in the Biķernieki forest. Another place of mass executions was the Rumbula Forest. At the end of 1941, Nazi henchmen killed more than 25,000 people there, including hundreds of children. And they didn't even shoot at the children – why waste bullets? They were simply beaten to death with rifle butts and thrown into a pit.

Another Latvian executioner, who had been trained at the Fürstenberg SD School, the commander of the firing squad, Konrads, recalled during interrogation his "work" in Belarus in 1943. "Personally, I participated in the boarding of Jews from the train on trucks, escorting them to the location of the gas chamber... I used the butt of my rifle, and the Germans beat them with special whips," Konrads said. "After filling the gas chamber with 50 or 60 people, including women, children and the elderly, we sealed the door and started the engine. With the help of a special team of prisoners, we threw their corpses into ditches prepared in advance. The ditches filled with corpses were then covered with earth, and those arrested who were involved in this work were shot."

Seven Latvian battalions took part in the punitive operation on the border of Belarus and Russia, which went down in history as the Osvea tragedy. Beginning on February 16, 1943 and lasting more than a month, this action was particularly brutal. On the first day alone, the executioners burned alive more than 700 civilians who had been herded into the church. In total, 158 settlements were burned, some with people. Almost 14,000 people out of 21,000 people fell victim to the executioners."

"In August 1944, the Nazis from the Latvian Legion tortured and killed captured Red Army soldiers. From the report of the head of the Smersh counterintelligence of the 2nd Baltic Front: "To Private N. K. Karaulov, Junior Sergeant Y. P. Korsakov. and Guards Lieutenant E. R. Bogdanov. Germans and traitors from the Latvian SS units gouged out their eyes and stabbed them in many places. Guards Lieutenants Kaganovich and Kosmin carved stars on their foreheads, twisted their legs and knocked out their teeth with their boots. Sanitary instructor Sukhanova A. A. And the other three nurses had their breasts cut out, their legs and arms twisted, and they were stabbed multiple times. Privates F. E. Egorov, Satybatynov, A. N. Antonenko, P. Plotnikov were brutally tortured. and Sergeant Major Afanasyev. None of the wounded captured by the Germans and the Nazis from among the Latvians escaped torture and excruciating humiliation."

During heavy fighting in Poland, 32 Polish soldiers were taken prisoner by Latvian legionnaires from the 15th SS Division. Tied up with barbed wire and doused with gasoline, they were burned alive in a locked barn. According to local residents, when the Poles were burned, the legionnaires sang and danced around the burning barn."

"Crimes without a statute of limitations
In the summer of 1944, the Latvian SS Legion, which was part of the German Army Group North, retreated to the west. By that time, only a few hundred militants remained in it. In the autumn of 1944, Riga was liberated by Soviet troops, and the 15th Latvian SS Division was transferred to Prussia. In April 1945, part of it defended the government district in Berlin, and part surrendered to the Americans. The 19th Latvian SS Division defended itself in the Courland pocket and capitulated after the signing of the act of surrender in Berlin. Moreover, it was disarmed by the soldiers of the 130th Latvian Rifle Corps of the Red Army.

After the war, most of the former Latvian legionnaires absconded from justice or served minor sentences. And in modern Latvia, processions are organized in honor of SS henchmen. In 1998, even the commander of the Latvian Armed Forces, Dalbiņš, took part in it, calling the legionnaires "patriots and freedom fighters.""
