While reading through this, I was going to reply that the article boils down to - don’t focus on things that could be built, pour your effort into things that should be built and then I read the last paragraphs, touché genius boy. But, an even more succinct summary of the article could be “during a gold rush, sell shovels”, and that’s entirely correct. Thus why I’m trying to build a defense start-up 🤷‍♂️

Americans hubris is reaching all time balkanization. It’s literally the same phenomenon, where in a country like Bulgaria, not being a scammer or a grifter is seen as not being industrious or intelligent enough, trying to maintain the system is naive. For Americans, not sacrificing your children to the GDP/stonks go up cult is seen as obscene and obsolete. Getting more blackpilled on the China century with every passing day…

I really don’t care if I don’t make the cut after the great filter. I’ve had a lot of interesting experiences way before I turned 25. But we can’t continue living like this. The bill must come due. (Shiieet I’d even go voluntarily if someone offers me to have sex with that one ex™️ on the way out)

If he’s working in O&G, especially with the big boys that have trading desks, then he can go into commods. Usually you do engineer -> analyst/scheduler -> asset economist -> trader (not quant, a physical commodities trader, later down the line he can go into a fund with enough exp). Seeing he’s in Chicago, it’s unlikely he’s in energy, so he’ll have to do something really unorthodox and look for smaller teams at first if he’s targeting quant. Network like crazy too, that’s inevitable, someone has to give you a shot for such an orthogonal career switch.
