Start with the conservative groups. The American Conservative Union Foundation wanted to rent a Kennedy Center stage for a summit about “ending Christian persecution.” That’s $42,000, normally. But the minute the Trump-installed leadership touched the contract, that bill magically dropped to $20,007, with fees for audio, video, lighting, recording, and broadcasting simply … evaporating. A discount so steep it should have triggered frostbite.

Then came the FIFA deal—a world-class demonstration of what happens when you mix global sports, political patronage, and Trumpworld’s legendary respect for financial norms. Renting out the Kennedy Center for nearly three weeks during its most profitable season should have cost FIFA around $5 million, including the millions in lost ticket sales and rescheduling expenses. Instead, Grenell’s team waived essentially the entire amount. Free. The Kennedy Center—your tax-supported national cultural institution—handed FIFA one of the sweetest venue deals on Earth.

Meanwhile, real artists, orchestras, holiday productions, and the employees who keep the place running were shoved aside like afterthoughts. Performances were canceled. Rehearsals were scrapped. Musicians and staff scrambled to find replacement spaces, all so the Trump administration could turn the Kennedy Center into a backdrop for its global wheeling and dealing.

And who benefited? According to internal emails, invoices, and whistleblower accounts reviewed by Senate Democrats: Trump allies, loyalists, campaign associates, and the friends and former staff of Richard Grenell himself.

Tens of thousands of dollars went to lavish meals, champagne services, and luxury hotel stays at the Watergate—paid for by the Kennedy Center, even as ticket sales cratered by 50% and longtime patrons abandoned the institution in protest. Consultants tied to Trumpworld were quietly hired at five-figure monthly fees. A political operative married to a prominent election denier was brought on to produce social media videos—for nearly $11,000 a month.

And while all this was happening, the Trump administration formally seized the Kennedy Center, booted every Biden-appointed trustee, installed Trump as chairman, and turned the place into a glitzy staging ground for Middle East investment forums, arms-length global deals, and high-profile announcements designed to burnish the image of the one person Trump cares most about: himself.

As Senator Sheldon Whitehouse put it, this isn’t just mismanagement—it’s “an unprecedented pattern of self-dealing, favoritism and waste.” And that was the polite version.

The worst part? Whistleblowers say Grenell’s team even floated bundling Kennedy Center subscriptions with political contributions to Trump—a scheme so brazen it collapsed under its own absurdity before it could get off the ground.

So here we are: America’s cultural crown jewel, hollowed out and hijacked for political loyalty tests, sweetheart deals, and champagne-soaked perks for Trumpworld insiders. Ticket sales are tanking. Donors are fleeing. Artists are being pushed aside so foreign dignitaries can sip cocktails under gold-trimmed ceilings while posing with members of Trump’s cabinet.

Senate Democrats are demanding answers. The documents are piling up. And one thing is already clear: The Trump takeover of the Kennedy Center isn’t just corrupt—it's the perfect symbol of everything Trumpism has always meant: public institutions repurposed as private playgrounds for the powerful, the connected, and the loyal.

America deserves a cultural center. Trump turned it into a clubhouse. And the bill, as always, lands in the public’s lap.

The president and vice president shouldn't be upset about having missed the service. The service was not political, and they weren't in any way mentioned, as it was not about them in any way. It was about duty and honor and integrity and decency and love, and about a man whose life and example teach others about those things. So the president and vice president would not have enjoyed it. It would have confused and confounded them; not only would they not have understood it, it likely would have offended them. The service was moving, touching, and inspiring. It was beautiful, magnificent, and perfect, even apart from the fact they were not there.
