We know about Todd Beamer’s actions and leadership on United Airlines Flight 93 primarily through a phone call with GTE airphone supervisor Lisa Jefferson, as well as the flight's cockpit voice recorder and subsequent FBI and 9/11 Commission investigations.
Key details of how his final moments were documented include:
The Airphone Call: After the plane was hijacked, Beamer attempted to use a credit card through a seatback phone. He was routed to a customer service representative and then transferred to supervisor Lisa Jefferson, remaining on the line with her for much of the flight while FBI agents listened in.
The Plan to Revolt: Beamer informed Jefferson that the passengers had learned via phone calls about other hijacked planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He stated that the remaining passengers and crew had voted and hatched a plan to jump on the hijackers, take back control, and crash the plane before it could hit its intended target in Washington, D.C.
"Let's Roll": Before putting down the phone to join the collective effort to storm the cockpit, Beamer recited the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm with Jefferson. His last audible words heard by Jefferson before the line went silent were, "Are you ready? Okay. Let's roll."
Cockpit Audio and Confirmation: The 9/11 Commission Report later corroborated these events using the cockpit voice recorder, which captured sounds of passengers physically storming and pounding on the cockpit door, shouting "Let's get them!", and fighting the hijackers until the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
