Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, was martyred at age 86. Traditionally a disciple of the Apostle John, he led the church in Roman Asia Minor. Arrested during persecution, he faced death by fire, saying, ‘You try to frighten me with fire that burns for an hour and forget the fire of hell that never burns out.’
The Martyrdom of Polycarp records he died by a soldier’s sword after the flames didn’t finish the job. His courage, written down early, strengthened the early Church.
