A brave police officer who died after losing control of his motorbike on the A12 while responding to an incident had only just returned to active duty, a court has heard.
PC Mathew Parker, 43, was fatally injured after his motorbike collided with a barrier on the major road near Ingatestone on November 19 last year.
Essex Coroner’s Court heard the incident, which involved no other vehicles, occurred on PC Parker’s first day back at work after around a month off due to sickness. The coroner found that there was “no significance” behind this however and she was confident that Mr Parker, from Loughton was fit and ready to return to work.
PC Parker’s family said he had “lived a life defined by dedication and integrity”, describing him as “a man of strong values and a generous heart”. The force’s Chief Constable, Ben-Julian Harrington, said he would "forever be grateful" for PC Parker's service.
PC Parker was riding his police motorcycle towards Chelmsford on November 19 when he re-joined the A12 southbound in order to respond to an emergency. The officer, who was a trained emergency responder, is thought to have been travelling at around 96 mph when he overtook a car shortly before losing control of his bike.
A witness reported seeing the father-of-two “wobble and fishtail” before colliding with a metal barrier. A post-mortem was undertaken and a cause of death recorded as head trauma.
Ms Michelle Brown, area coroner for Essex, said Mr Parker suffered “catastrophic injuries”. He was declared dead at the scene.
She said: “I would like to send my sympathies to Mr Parker’s family and friends, but also know that a lot of his colleagues at Essex Police were extremely traumatised by this incident. He was a very well-liked colleague.”
PC Parker joined Essex Police in 2010, serving his entire career in West Essex with the Loughton Local Policing Team and latterly the Chigwell Roads Policing Team. Tributes were paid to Mat from across the emergency services community with a formal funeral last December. Hundreds turned out to pay their respects to the fallen officer.
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said Mat “made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life while responding to a call for help”. He added: "Mat was brave, he was courageous, and we are all grateful to him for his service. We stand united in grief with his heartbroken family and continue to support them through this unimaginably difficult time.”

Joining the military was the BEST decision I ever made! 👌
Wearing the uniform and serving our country was the highlight of my life! I know for many still serving it won’t always feel like that, but never underestimate how much you will miss it when you take it off for the last time! Stay safe wherever you are today! 👊🫶
Yesterday we said goodbye to one of the very best. Retired PD Deema was a truly special girl who served Merseyside Police with courage, loyalty and determination throughout her career, earning multiple commendations along the way. She'll never be forgotten. Run free, Deema. 💙🐾

We're going to nail this lazy, anti-social, bloke.
However... we're not totally sure of where this fly-tipping location is. We think it might be in Petersfield, Hants.
Can anyone confirm or challenge this? Please email [email protected] with any info. Thanks.
