Legendary singer Cyndi Lauper comes to Nicki Minaj’s defense, making it clear that she doesn’t believe in canceling people over their opinions.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Lauper was asked about Nicki’s political views and her decision to sample the singer’s iconic 1983 hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 2023. She reaffirmed her stance against cancel culture, explaining that she still stands by their collaboration.
“First of all, I don’t believe in cancellation. And second of all, the fact that she did ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ musically, it’s a political thing anyway, babes. Girls just want to have fun. They’re entitled to a joyful experience in this world. […] But I still don’t think you cancel people, because otherwise there’s no room for discussion.”
Lauper also emphasized the importance of listening to others and allowing people the space to grow and evolve, adding, “If you want people to listen to you, you need to listen to people. If you don’t let people evolve, what are you doing?”
