A Feel-Good Tearjerker #LoloAndTheKid

The Netflix film started off like Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy or the indie, Lawn Dogs. A comedy about an unlikely duo; a smart- mouth kid and a crook of a father-figure or in this case a Lolo.
Comedy?
Not when I found myself blinking back tears.

The story is pretty simple. It is about an old conman (played by the brilliant Joel Torre) and his adopted child, Kid (The child wonder from Firefly, Euwenn Mikael Aleta) who became his literal partner in crime. They are a pair of swindlers, duping a bunch of childless parents in an elaborate modus.

Honestly, at first…. I did not know what to feel. Watching them go from one crime to the next, it was at first hard to find empathy for the characters. It just felt like uproarious shenanigans and crude humor.

But soon, the film wins you over as it becomes more earnest of the human condition. Of what unconditional love can really mean. Once Joel Torre’s Lolo character tells us the fairy tale of the evil king and the little prince, I found my heart softening.

The film is extremely well-acted, with cameos of amazing actors.

The lead, Joel Torre gives a heartfelt and gutting performance as Lolo Mario. I love how he wins as over in the film, how at one point we see him as an obnoxious ass to really just a loving lolo.

Euwenn is such a natural in the role, he made Kid very real to me.

And watch out for Juan Karlos’ role too, totally etched and made a poignant mark on the film.

The beauty of the film is in its sentimentality and directness. The simplicity of it all. Benedict Mique who is more known for his tv project, the controversial Darna —- understands that the real emotions come from the simplest human experiences and our sacrifices for love. It is fast-paced and shifts the tone to melodrama without it being emotionally manipulative. The director redeems himself here.

It is one sweet film that feels like a tearful hug.

I am bawling as I hear Juan Karlos sing “Through the Years” and it somehow feels good.

Worth the watch.
