Manu Abhishek s/o Umesh Sharma has announced a formal disownment of his father, who is allegedly defending accused Swatantra Bhardwaj.

If a lower conviction rate is the criterion for delegitimising an Act, then UAPA should be called out first, especially given how it has been used to target Muslims.

Between 2019 and 2023, 10,440 people were arrested under UAPA, but only 335 were convicted, meaning just 3.2% of those arrested were convicted.

The SC/ST Act has a higher conviction rate than UAPA, so perhaps Anand Ranganathan should start by speaking out against UAPA.

even the most secular and rationally thinking Hindus refrain from using the word “terrorism” for these Hindutva terrorists like Swatantra. why? because deep down, as supposedly secular as they are, the word “terrorism” is reserved for Muslims and Islam. it is very subtle but they don’t want their religion or faith to be tarnished in the slightest. its pious nature must remain so. was 1984 Sikh pogrom not terrorism? was Gujarat 2002 pogrom not terrorism? was Delhi 2020 pogrom not terrorism? what else is terrorism? but the internalised urge to protect their faith keeps them away from addressing things as they are. it is also another way to reassure yourself that your religion is peaceful and godly and nothing wrong can be done in the name of it.

When @zoo_bear was arrested by Delhi Police in 2022 based on a manufactured complaint, court had ordered 4 days of remand and he was kept in IFSO office in Sector 16 in Dwarka during the remand period. I would go see him from a distance everyday because he was allowed to meet the lawyer everyday, and I would go along, but i wasn't allowed to speak with him. Once he was going to be taken for a health checkup (as part of regular procedure), which would mean he would have to be put into a police van and taken to the hospital. I was present there at that point in time and saw a lone camera person standing outside the gate. I was intrigued as to how does this media person know that Zubair's going to be taken for a checkup. I asked him which media organisation he's from, and it of course turned out to be ANI. Essentially Delhi Police had informed ANI that the camera person should be there so that the images can be shown widely on social media. Thankfully, that case didn't go the Umar Khalid way and he eventually got bail in 23 days. In those days, he was shuttled between different towns of UP and Delhi and the ANI camera followed him everywhere. Today, Swatantra Bhardwaj has been sent to police remand for an actual crime, but ANI has no photos to show.
