Once upon a time in CA (before 2014), this theft at PetSmart would qualify as a felony commercial burglary with up to a 3 year prison penalty if caught & convicted. The notion that people should be able to commit crimes without consequence, and then be released immediately from jail to go victimize others is absolutely insane!

Over the weekend, a woman was arrested for slamming her car into stores, destroying several businesses and burning a car in LA. She was released on $0 bail. Yesterday, she went on a crime spree, setting approximately 10 fires, almost killing two people who were sleeping in a car, and completely destroying Florist Mark’s Garden in Sherman Oaks.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mark and all the victims. This is not prioritizing public safety. $0 bail and George Gascón have completely left out the victims and the safety of our communities. It isn’t right. We must take LA back.

DA Reisig is absolutely correct.Throwing funding at this problem is not the solution.The root causes must be addressed through legislative reforms. This proclamation of support by @GavinNewsom is not a panacea for improved safety, but rather a superficial display of brinkmanship!

Until the law is fixed so that: 1) repeat offenders can eventually be charged with felonies; 2) all thefts can be reasonably aggregated to get to a felony and; 3) the ORC statute is made less onerous for prosecutors to actually prove and it delivers a possible prison deterrent, the retail theft crisis will continue. The money is a nice gesture though.
