@txhsfbchat Some great Coaches out there that are passionate about football who also run a business or have a different job. Maybe put a limit per staff. 2 or 3 between Jr HS/HS? This could help close the gap on Coaching shortages.
September 2005.
Hurricane Rita was bearing down on Texas.
Texas A&M moved its game against Texas State from Saturday to Thursday night.
Most people remember the evacuation.
I remember Barrick Nealy throwing for 378 yards and the Bobcats having the ball at the Aggie 7-yard line late in the 4th quarter with a chance to make Kyle Field very uncomfortable.
One of the great “what if” games in Bobcat history.

@CoachSwit One factor I believe is the gap from little league ending at 12U then programs not having a Jr. HS option. Only the travel ball kids are left playing 7th and 8th grade. When they get to freshman year those years of development are lost. Burn out and cost to play as well.
@girdley Right in the middle of this is Caldwell, TX. I’m a land and ranch broker here and cover the central TX. Hit me up if anyone is interested in this area!
Great weekend of baseball! Cougar dominating the mound throwing 11 K’s in one game and going yard in another. Making 4 for the year and leading the team. Keep balling! Hard work pays off!
With Championship Programs: Playing time is earned.
It’s about practice, not politics.
It’s about hard work, not handouts.
It’s about ability, not agendas.
It’s about standards, not spite.
It’s about improvement, not influence.
It’s about performance, not people pleasing.
From A Football Life: @WesWelker's HS coach reached out to 105 colleges on behalf of Wes Welker ... Only 1 school responded: @TexasTechFB (Thanks to Tommy McVay).
Mike Leach was on the phone with McVay discussing whether to offer Welker a scholarship ... In front of Welker 🤣
By the end of Welker's Texas Tech career, he was Tech's all-time leader in:
- Catches (259)
- Receiving Yards (3,069)
- *Punt Return Yards (1,761 - also NCAA record)
- Punt Return TDs (8 - a then NCAA record)
- All Purpose Yards (5,730)
* = still the all-time leader
From the "little kid from Oklahoma City", to one of the greatest slot receivers we've ever seen. Incredible journey!
@DezBryant A hell of a Coach and person! I was young and just starting out in sport sales. Lufkin was one of the first teams I worked with. I was nervous to meet him and he welcomed me right in. You could tell how much he cared for his players and the community.
@coachzblair10 100% agree but on the flip side fall travel baseball is also not a reason to miss fall FB practice. Seems to be happing a lot at the youth level just to hold a roster spot til spring.
Successful programs don’t exist because thier kids are magically different. Kids haven’t fundamentally changed. What separates consistently successful programs across Texas is community alignment.
In places that win year after year, football is not just a team activity — it’s a community standard. Parents reinforce expectations at home. Businesses support the program. The town celebrates discipline, effort, and accountability. The message players hear at practice is the same message they hear at dinner, in classrooms, and around town.
When that alignment exists, athletes understand that buying into the culture isn’t optional. It becomes the norm. The environment shapes behavior long before a coach ever blows a whistle.
