@AlzheimersGuide I disagree with this. Life with Alzheimer's can still have moments of joy and connection. It is a thief, but it is not a barren, desolate existence. What is empty and lifeless is the typical response to Alzheimer's.
When someone talks past a person living with #Alzheimers disease or another form of #dementia as if he or she isn't even there, suggest this: “We are not here on earth to see through each other, we are here to see each other through."

Our sadness comes from what people with #Alzheimers or other forms of #dementia no longer can do, while their joy comes from what they still can do. However and whenever we are able, let’s embrace their abilities and their joys.

We must think beyond what is safe for our older companions to work to understand what we can do to help cultivate meaning & engagement in this stage of their lives. We need to focus first on individuals, not conditions.

Sock sorting is an excellent activity that can be modified for different stages of #dementia. For more cognitive residents, you can sort into pairs. As they progress, you can just fold socks together. As they get into the later stages, just feel them.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande is an incredible resource for anyone working w/ people near the end of life.
"Activities" in senior living are one of our primary opportunities for life enrichment. Here we can honor the lives & humanity of residents & walk with them in grace.
