Our war is done.
No more goodbyes,
no long farewells,
no hope to shun.

It’s safe at last.
Harsh days are through.
We held our ground,
we never bowed.

Our hardened hearts,
beaten and worn,
calloused by partings,
now can be warm.

So long, stoic mask.
Be gone, steel eyes.
Hope is no hopeless task,
we can allow cries.

I’m ready to feel,
to live in today.
This time it’s real.
This time I stay.

I’ve learned to live
without the mask.
It served its task,
now I can give.

But I see in you
the steel still stays.
Eyes locked away,
lost in old days.

Why hold so fast,
still hide from the sun?
We’ve won at last,
please, drop the one.

Did we wear it so long
you can’t live without?
We’ve ended the fight,
we’ve won the bout.

I wrote poems for me,
to make sense of the toll,
how war left me broken,
and hollowed my soul.

Now I see you,
you hardened too.
You learned to endure,
to be strong for two.

But it’s safe now.
Our war is done.
We can lower the guard,
and stand in the sun.
