This scene is genuinely heartbreaking. Xia Fei seems to intentionally make Lu Guang a bad cup of coffee, whether the beans were expired, or he simply prepared it in a way that made it taste awful. Considering Lu Guang’s childhood and the deprivation he went through, seeing someone he trusts treat him this way feels especially cruel.

What hurts even more is the contrast with the first episode, when Lu Guang got a fever and fainted from worrying about Xia Fei. Now Xia Fei is the one watching him drink something he knowingly made unpleasant, smiling as he does.

To me, the coffee feels almost like poison disguised as kindness. Xia Fei presents himself as Lu Guang’s friend while hiding such malicious intentions toward him.

And yet Lu Guang still doesn’t suspect him. He questions the coffee beans, not Xia Fei’s intentions. He sees a friend. We see someone hiding poison behind a smile.
