Leaving the outskirts behind, I arrived in the urban center of Gejiu. The scene here remains frozen in time—much as it was over a decade ago—and I truly adore this kind of old place: full of character and cultural resonance, yet equipped with thoroughly modern amenities.
It is home to a rare ground-level funicular railway, delicious local milk, and a populace that retains a wonderfully laid-back demeanor. From my vantage point on the hillside, the city’s azure lake shifted in hue as the hours passed; meanwhile, a charming cat kept me company,
so much so that one feels a sense of spiritual purification in their presence. Despite leading lives seemingly devoid of material quality, they appear utterly detached from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
