🇲🇦 Arabism is failing?

Not even going to lie, I had no Idea about the Moroccans not being Arabs. I feel bad.

But some info for those like me that didn't know:

1. Amazigh identity is thousands of years older than Arab identity

The Amazigh are indigenous North Africans, with roots going back at least 3,000–5,000 years.

They existed long before:

-Arab migrations
-Islam
-Arabic language
-Arab empires

Their languages (Tamazight, Kabyle, Tachelhit, etc.) are part of the Afroasiatic family, but not Arabic.

So when someone calls them “Arabs,” they feel like their entire ancient identity is being erased.

2. Arabization was a political project, not a natural identity shift

From the 7th century onward, Arab rule brought:

-Islam
-Arabic language
-Arab administrative systems

But most Amazigh did not become ethnically Arab. They adopted Islam, sometimes Arabic, but kept their own identity.

In the 20th century, Arab nationalist governments (especially in Algeria and Morocco) pushed forced Arabization:

-Arabic-only schools
-Banning Amazigh names
-Suppressing Amazigh language
-Treating Amazigh identity as “tribal” or “backward”

This created a long-term resentment. So when someone casually says “you’re Arab,” it hits a nerve tied to political erasure.

3. Amazigh culture is distinct from Arab culture
They have their own:

-languages
-alphabet (Tifinagh)
-music
-clothing
-tribal structures
-mythology
-architecture
-cuisine

Many Amazigh see Arab identity as foreign to their heritage.

4. Many Amazigh fought Arab empires historically
Amazigh leaders like:

-Kahina (Dihya)
-Tariq ibn Ziyad
-Yusuf ibn Tashfin
-Abd al-Mu’min

were Amazigh, not Arab.

The Almoravids and Almohads — huge medieval empires — were Amazigh, not Arab.

They often resisted Arab rule or operated independently.

So historically, Amazigh identity was never subordinate to Arab identity.
