if you are European and you don't know the name Ekrem İmamoğlu, remember it after today.
here is why.
İmamoğlu is the Mayor of Istanbul. 16 million people. the largest city in a NATO member state. he ran against Erdoğan's candidate twice and won both times. in a country where Erdoğan has dominated every election for over two decades, İmamoğlu was the one man who proved he could actually lose.
so Erdoğan had him arrested.
March 2025. the morning after İmamoğlu was nominated as the opposition's presidential candidate for 2028. pre-dawn raid. Silivri prison. 143 allegations. a potential sentence of 2,430 years.
and now this.
yesterday, in a courtroom built opposite his prison, İmamoğlu stood before a judge and said four words that tell you everything about what is happening to Turkish democracy right now.
"i did not remain silent."
here is the context. at a previous hearing in July, İmamoğlu asked for more time to present his defense. the judge refused. a heated exchange followed. the judge threatened to record him as having exercised his right to remain silent if he kept pushing back.
when the trial resumed yesterday after a 40-day recess, that is exactly what the court had written into the official minutes.
that he had remained silent.
he had done no such thing.
"the notion that i exercised my right to remain silent is entirely fabricated," he told the judge yesterday. "i also do not accept the term waiver."
a man fighting 143 allegations in a case that could imprison him for the rest of his life now has to fight the court record itself just to prove he was not silent when he was removed from his own trial.
and here is why this is a European story and not just a Turkish one.
Turkey is a NATO member. your governments sign trade deals with Ankara. your leaders talk about shared values and strategic partnerships.
and in a prison courtroom in Silivri, the man who represents the democratic alternative to Erdoğan is fighting a judge over whether his own words will be accurately recorded in his own trial.
if the court controls what goes into the minutes, it controls the trial.
if it controls the trial, the verdict was never really in question.
remember the name.
