Since the 7th of March, when he raised petrol prices by Rs 55 per litre including an increase in levy on petrol by Rs 21, PM Mian Shehbaz Sharif sb has been saying his govt will undertake austerity and accept the burden of increased petrol and diesel prices without burdening the people anymore. Then yesterday he made a U-turn and raised petrol prices by Rs 138. The price rise included an increase of Rs 55 per litre levy on petrol. (The govt also raised diesel price by Rs 184).

Some of us pointed out today that the new petrol price of Rs 458 included taxes and duties of Rs 187 (or 40%).

PMLN leaders and their allied anchors etc spent the day praising the PM and his “bold” decision to raise taxes and prices. But the public wasn’t buying it. There was no reason to punish motorcyclists and other petrol consumers to subsidise diesel users. That the govt should have done from its own funds.

Now Mian Sahib has taken another U-turn in 24 hours and reduced the taxes on petrol from Rs 187 to Rs 107. The new petrol price will be Rs 378 per litre. Thank god for small mercies.
