The Kilifi Central fish landing project is yet another example of what happens when we don’t follow the law when doing shiny things. What is otherwise a much needed facility has left a bitter taste hapa because the community feels their views were totally ignored from conception to execution. We must restore participatory democracy where the people are at the centre of all decisions government makes.
How will history judge NEMA? The people of Owino Uhuru have been waiting, some until they died, for the authority to do what the courts ordered it to do and spend some 700M remediating the environment after nearly two decades of lead contamination. They stalled and stalled , and now have produced test results from KEPHIS saying that nature has healed the environment in Owino Uhuru. It wants the courts to vacate the order. What a coincidence that the application comes a month before a ruling is to be made about their failure to comply with earlier orders. It is beyond cynical.
Saba Saba Day comes to an end and history repeats itself- dead bodies, looted businesses and chaos.
But one question echoes louder than the rest: Mbona Mnaua MaGenZ?

With all due respect Raila, stories from the 1980s won’t solve the crises of 2025. Today’s youth are facing unemployment, over-taxation, systemic exclusion and many other issues. Recycling liberation tales from decades ago wont help.
