While everyone in S.Korea is doom-scrolling on this pivotal election night, I think of the ordinary women/men I met in the court of reporting for my book & whose daily lives may be deeply affected by the outcome of the election, esp. in terms of gender equality (a long thread)
In this opinion piece for @thenation, I wrote about how antifeminism was weaponized in South Korea's presidential election, and how feminists and many young women in the country are bracing for a "long, hard winter" that may lie ahead. https://t.co/jj5vk6B2Be

The portion of our conversation that left me w/out words was when Jang opened his wallet and showed me the bottom left corner of his ID card, where there was a message that lets anyone who may find him (if he ever gets into an accident) know that he's a certified organ donor.
For @restofworld's global gig workers project, I shadowed Baemin delivery driver Jang Hyuk. While I rode on the back of his motorcycle back in May, he shared how fragile digitally-mediated gig work can be esp. at Korea's most popular food delivery app.

After a week of hearing stories about how some minorities including the #LGBTQ community are treated in Korea, it was uplifting to see this poster in a shop in #Seoul. An anti-discrimination law won’t on its own create a fairer society but it will provided much needed protections
A U.N. panel of experts tasked with monitoring international sanctions on N. Korea has descended into infighting—in the form of dissenting footnotes—as China seeks to help its ally and feuds with the U.S.

A mind-blowing story about the fate of ethnic minorities in Myanmar, told through the lives of two former child soldiers once worshipped as God-like figures but now grappling with the trauma of exile, alcohol and loss. https://t.co/s1GNt33qr4
South Korea, too - although our version of using-women-as clickbait comes in the form of crime news headlines:
- Toilet girl (murdered at a public toilet)
- Endoscopy girl (sexually abused during endoscopy)
- Trunk girl/Bag girl (whose bodies were found in a car trunk/a bag)
South Korean police arrested a man who operated notorious Telegram chatrooms in which he shared videos of at least 58 women & 16 underage girls being sexually abused/raped with 10,000 paid members - in one of the most egregious cases of digital sex crime reported in the country.
So here, for @latimesfood, is Jessie's story — about her love of cooking, about the food of her home, about her ordinary extraordinary life.

As we celebrate Parasite and its class-divide theme, the jobless rate in South Korea has risen for a fifth month, reminding us problems in the real world will require action beyond critical acclaim https://t.co/NhGFmAcll4
This really breaks my heart. A 60-year-old woman was holding her six-year-old granddaughter in her arms when their tour boat sank to the bottom of Danube river last month. https://t.co/CeDWkkFS0J
Lee- one of South Korea's first-generation feminists- led efforts to revise the sexist family laws, pushed her husband to found the nation's first gender equality ministry during his term and helped many women to enter politics (many went on to become top politicians today). RIP.
