MLK was initially added to Lee-Jackson Day in 1983, and then Lee and Jackson were dropped.

Lee and Jackson were godly Christians.

John Adams said the American Revolution was founded on the general principles of Christianity and the general principles of English and American liberty. These are particular to a people, with no equivalents from other cultures. At the same time, there were Dutch, German, French, and other European settlers in the era, who became American based on their devotion to those principles. The truth seems to be both/and: Americans are a people, but a people who have created room for assimilation based on shared ideals.

But we should be honest, the people part does matter. Liberia was founded on the abstract principles listed above, but was not able to replicate America. Although it might be uncomfortable, it's not racism or discrimination to observe that descendants of the Mayflower are, at least in a qualified way, "more American" that a recent Somali migrant who doesn't speak English, practice Christianity, or believe in Anglo-American liberties. Most people consider it obvious.
