During my official visit to a public elementary school in Havana, I had the pleasure of meeting a fifth-grade student who was introduced to me.
In Cuba, efforts are being made to recognize children as rights-holders and to ensure, through institutional measures, both their protection and their participation. The National Assembly of People’s Power also places importance on incorporating children’s views into policymaking.
I was told that, during deliberations on amendments to the Family Code, she spoke at the National Assembly on behalf of children and shared their views.
I was deeply impressed by Cuba’s efforts to put into practice, both institutionally and in people’s lives, the principle enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child: that children have the right to be heard and to have their views taken seriously.
