When Kieran Richardson was coming through at Manchester United, he was doing it a little differently to most of the other young players.
United wanted him to sign a professional contract.
His team-mates were already signing theirs.
But Richardson and his dad did not want to do it until he felt he had properly earned it.
โI donโt want to be a pro until Iโm worthy of being a pro.โ
So while other young players were suddenly earning proper money, Richardson was still on about ยฃ180 a week.
Then, on his 18th birthday, he was named on the bench for United in the Champions League.
It was away to Olympiacos in October 2002.
United were winning 3-2.
Every player who got on the pitch that night was due a win bonus.
ยฃ12,000.
For Richardson, that was life-changing money.
โIโm the guy who is on ยฃ180 a week.โ
The game was almost finished when Ferguson suddenly turned to him.
โKieran, get on the pitch now.โ
โNo warming up.โ
Richardson started scrambling to get his kit sorted, knowing there were only a couple of minutes left.
โIโm like, โs***, get on quick.โโ
Then, as he ran past Ferguson to go on, he got the birthday message.
โHappy birthday, son.โ
That was it.
A few minutes on the pitch.
A Champions League debut.
And ยฃ12,000 landing in the account of a teenager who had been earning ยฃ180 a week.
โI saw ยฃ12,000, Champions League bonus.โ
โGet me down to the Trafford Centre.โ
โIโm buying some jeans and trainers.โ
Years later, Richardson still saw it for what it was.
โWhat a nice guy.โ

@Dan__Burke__@CantonaManc@KobiiBanks But Barcelona would have to pay the full โฌ26 million upfront, whereas Gordon could be signed in installments. Plus, Gordon is still quite young. And also tactical POV as well
@HenryBla7k@theboyGandoki True. However England mostly used 442 in those days. Even Paul Scholes play on left mid/wing similiar to Beckham. Those years 2002-2006 were golden age for England. Even Capello couldn't do much.
@HenryBla7k@theboyGandoki Carrick, Alonso, Busquest, Pirlo. They were master of their craft. But England national team rated him poorly. Even Gareth Berry ahead of him ๐
