Louis Reard - the inventor of the bikini, shown here with a model in 1946.

He named his creation after the Bikini Atoll, which was the sight of nuclear weapons tests.

But why? He felt his new bikini swimsuit design would create an “explosive commercial and cultural reaction”.

At the time no fashion model in Paris would wear his invention for many reasons so the first models were stripers from a local club he hired. And they would only do it for a month salary.

But Reard knew that if he got a few women to model it at the beach, the competitive nature of some women would start a trend to out do each other. Few thought it would work.
