There’s this viral image of a rooster on top of a hawk that I see quite often.

The caption always includes some version of “This hawk messed with the wrong rooster.”And proceeds to say the rooster killed the hawk and only suffered a few scratches.

And while the pic is great, the story felt a bit fishy. So I did some investigation, feeling sure that it was BS.

And realized I was wrong. The story is true.

The reason I was skeptical of the first image is, my family raises chickens at their vineyard.

Hawks are an omnipresent problem and we’ve lost plenty of chickens over the years to them. Roosters don’t typically kill hawks. They are heavily outmatched even if the hawk is smaller than them, I’m sad to say. My guess is that the above hawk was sick, weak, old or juvenile.
Hawks have knives on powerful their feet and know how to use them much more effectively than roosters do.

Most roosters have spurs, but they are nothing like a hawks. Even a small hawk can squeeze its talons much harder than your average human.

The rooster generally plays the role of alarm and sacrificial lamb. He throws himself at the hawk like a kamikaze bird, or he will cause enough of a raucous to make the hawk think it isn’t worth the trouble.

Why does this matter? Because a hawk will often kill several chickens before leaving with one (it will mortally wound several before finally settling on one). The next morning always looks like a crime scene, with dead chickens laying around.

The rooster hedges against that risk.

Chickens are considered a delicacy by wild animals, due to how much nutrition they contain.

After one bad hawk attack, my family bought this huge aggressive rooster to deal with the problem.

Sadly, this new tough guy rooster, made life hell for us. If we went in to feed the chickens, he started flexing on you like he wants to fight. He’d come after you, pecking, squawking, and flapping his wings. He was aggressive and bullied the other chickens. We ended up having to give him away.

The point being, you typically need a more well-rounded plan to deal with hawks. An alpha rooster can definitely be a nice addition to that plan.
