The analogy doesn’t hold up because fanfiction is not the same thing as commercial music. They’re more akin to those bands you form as a kid or teen and playing for your parents and friends.

You don’t really know an ancient language if you can’t translate into it, and you can’t translate well into Greek or Latin prose or verse unless you grasp how the ancients thought and articulated their thoughts.

It’s a skill that takes a lot of reading, learning, immersion in texts, and observation of style and idiom.
