One of the finest photographs of the Royal Navy at the height of its power. Taken at Spithead, in the Solent between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, on 18 July 1914, as the fleet assembled for inspection by King George V.
The sheer scale of the fleet is extraordinary. Just weeks before the outbreak of the First World War, British naval power was a sight to behold.
Britannia ruled the waves. 🇬🇧 ⚓
The Omaha Beach scene from Saving Private Ryan (1998) was depicted with so much accuracy to the actual event that the Department of Veterans Affairs set up a telephone hotline for traumatized veterans to cope.

This day in history (July 30th) 1945 After delivering secret atomic bomb parts, the cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in 12 minutes. Due to a communication failure, rescue arrived four days late. Of the 900 men who entered the water, only 316 survived the grueling ordeal of dehydration, exposure, and relentless shark attacks. This harrowing historical tragedy inspired Captain Quint’s famous monologue in the movie Jaws. #history #pacificwar #ww2 #wwii #sharks
