I applied for a senior role (mainly because that was the only role available) at the company that sponsored me abroad. They laughed it off during the interview but gave me a suitable role and level. Despite having a year of experience in that field. I got the job offer and relocation package. However, due to Covid restrictions, I ended up staying in Nigeria for an extra eight months and THEY WAITED.

Since then I’ve always gone for something bigger. The more interviews I do, the more I realise my gaps and the industry trends. Boom! Boom! Bam! After many interviews and feedback, you start talking, building and acting confidently and your current role feels junior because you’ve learned so much. This also applies to asking for promotion in your current firm . You don’t have to leave.

Sometime in the early 2000s, I was taking the New Nigeria Bank CEO and my Oga to the airport in his 7 Series BMW because his driver was stuck somewhere and they were late for their flight. The CEO was so impressed with the car that he said he was going to get one like that. My uncle told him that he had the wrong priorities and that a car wasn't an appreciating asset.

It was an interesting conversation. He explained to him that the car was a place he temporarily stored money. He always sold or traded in those high-end cars after a year or less for newer models, and their costs were “likely” deducted from tax as an expense. He is an accountant and knew a lot more than the average person about assets and liability management.

He told the CEO that a house in Ikoyi was better than all the exotic cars you could buy. It was funny that he bought a property from someone at Parkview, and the first thing the guy did was buy new cars with the advance payment before the deal was concluded. That guy is still hustling till today.

I learned a lot from that conversation, and I never saw his cars the same way again. He kept changing them, and those who were observing thought he was being extravagant. There is another friend in England who has also only had cars on a lease arrangement for the last 17 years. Leases are written off for tax purposes. He always gets a new model. Only the ignorant and the less wealthy see cars as a status symbol. For the wealthy, it is part of wealth and tax liability management.

That 2001 BMW 7 Series is worth nothing today; the houses in Ikoyi still pay out rent yearly.
