Oh boy. Let’s dive in.

Hubert Davis inherited a team that had one of its worst seasons ever in 2019-20 and a bubble team that lost by 23 in the first round in Williams’ last year

Davis went to the NATIONAL TITLE GAME and was one play away from winning it all. In year one.

Kenny Payne inherited a program that was ranked No. 1 in the country that same 2019-20 season. Louisville was 13-19 in ‘20-21 with a quality roster before the staff turnover. Louisville incurred, essentially, ZERO penalties from the NCAA.

The absolute delusion it takes to think the situation was so bad that leaving multiple scholarships open and then going 4-28 simply doesn’t count is unfathomable

Payne left more scholarships open, turned down an opportunity to tweak his staff, spurned golden opportunities from the Louisville NIL collective, and brought in players that make zero sense on this roster.

He booted a player from the team that teammates openly wanted and still want back and completely fumbled the PR on the issues over and over. The player continues to show up to games even though he’s not enrolled in school.

Two consecutive years, he failed to recruit high-level guard depth, turned down multiple chances to land lead guards, and instead opted for projects across the roster.

He has one commitment in the 2024 class, who didn’t sign during the early signing period, and has quite literally (1) other prospect on his radar.

Payne didn’t come into exactly the conditions that a Hubert Davis did but he walked into a program where he makes top 25 money, has a HUGE chunk of NIL money to dish out, the best arena in the country, elite level facilities, a top 10 program all-time, in a top 3 conference. Multiple massive alumni supporters. Nearly unmatched support from fans and boosters. One of the best brands in the sport.

Yet he continues to complain about how difficult the situation is, deflects blame on players, fans, etc. and rarely accepts the blame for himself.

We are desperate to cheer for this team. We WANT Kenny to succeed. We want something positive to talk about.

I am going to get on another podcast tomorrow and it feels like the topics will be the same stuff. It’s a pathetic, self-loathing Groundhog Day state of affairs. And, frankly, it’s long run its course. It’s an exhausting, toxic relationship with nothing positive feasibly on the horizon.

We support this team because it’s all we’ve ever known. It gets us through the winter. It’s in our blood.

And listening to this man, the person who is supposed to be a leader for the program, at our university, in our city, continue to go on about how difficult his situation is… it’s nauseating and frankly it’s a flat out lie.

This Louisville roster is manageable. And plenty of coaches around the country have done FAR better with much worse. Coaches have recruited to their program and their system far better with much less resources. For much less money.

Kenny Payne was handed the world. And he is complaining that he doesn’t have it good enough. It’s a slap in the face to all of us.
