Why are these audiences still allowed into the stadium? Can you imagine someone waving the Nazi swastika flag to support Germany now during the FIFA World Cup?
June 21 saw another group stage match of the World Cup, featuring Japan vs Tunisia — the 1,000th match in World Cup history, a landmark fixture marred by a highly controversial incident.
Broadcast footage captured a Japanese fan waving the Rising Sun Flag in the stands. This flag is a symbol of Japan’s militarist past and banned outright by FIFA, and Japan was sanctioned by the Asian Football Confederation after Japanese fans waved it at an AFC Champions League game in 2017.
Similar violations have occurred at previous international A-level games. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, security staff blocked Japanese fans trying to bring the flag into stadiums. And now again, the flag has been brought onto the World Cup stage.
To most Asians, the flag represents Japanese militarism and imperial aggression across Asia, reviving traumatic wartime memories for people across the continent. Waving Japan's national flag is no problem, but why the Rising Sun Flag? Isn't this yet another evil flower bred by the rising militarism and right-wing extremism in Japan? #WorldCup #FIFA #Japan #Football

Imagine bringing a Nazi flag to the World Cup. That’s how many people in East Asia feel about the Rising Sun Flag. Yet Japanese fans still displayed it in the stadium.
