On October 7th 1571, the Holy League fleet defeated the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Lepanto.

86 000 Christian sailors and soldiers on 212 ships clashed with 88 000 Ottoman sailors and soldiers on 274 ships west of the Greek coast in the Gulf of Patras.

It was the largest galley battle of the age and one of the largest naval battles in history together with Salamis, Jutland and Leyte Gulf in terms of the number of men involved.

The Holy League fleet, assembled by Spain, Venice, the Papal States and smaller Italian allies, under Don John of Austria, destroyed or captured most of the Ottoman fleet commanded by Müezzinzade Ali Pasha.

The victory halted an Ottoman naval offensive that had already taken Cyprus and threatened Venetian and Spanish positions farther west.

Around 8000 men from the Holy League were killed along with 20 000 Ottomans.

15 000 Christian galley slaves user by the Ottomans were freed while 10 000 drowned in the battle. Many of the freed Christian slaves were given swords during the battle and joined the Holy League in the fight, greatly aiding the Christian side.

The battle showed that a coordinated Christian coalition could match the sultan’s navy in open battle, something many contemporaries had begun to doubt after decades of Ottoman advances.

Psychologically it mattered as much as militarily: news of the win spread across Europe as proof that Ottoman expansion was not irresistible, and Pope Pius V ordered the date kept as a feast of thanksgiving.

Miguel de Cervantes, who was wounded in the fighting, later called it the greatest occasion the past, present or future ages had seen.

It ended the period in which the Ottomans could claim unchallenged naval supremacy, preserved Venice’s remaining empire and fixed 1571 as the symbolic high-water mark of Ottoman maritime power in the Mediterranean Sea.

Tocca agli Yankees attaccare George Lombard Jr conquista la prima base. Austin Wells viene eliminato. E’ il turno di Anthony Volpe.

Con un fuoricampo la partita andrebbe in parità. Griffin Jax dei Rays lancia la pallina, Volpe la colpisce con tutta la forza che ha in corpo e la scaraventa in fuoricampo. La sfera viene raccolta da un tifoso. È 4 a 4.
Gli arbitri non fanno riprendere il gioco. L’azione deve essere rivista dalle telecamere.

E le immagini vengono proiettate in diretta allo stadio. Il tifoso per afferrare la pallina allunga troppo le braccia, andando oltre il confine della tribuna. L'azione è annullata per interferenza esterna e si torna sul piatto a battere. Un colpo durissimo da cui gli Yankees non si riprenderanno più. La loro stagione finisce.

Il y a un très grand personnage de l’histoire de France qui n’a jamais eu droit à un grand film : Charles Martel.
Celui qui, au VIIIe siècle, a mis fin à l’invasion arabo-musulmane omeyyade de la France (vous comprenez maintenant pourquoi il n’a jamais eu droit à son film).

Pourtant, il y a tout pour faire un Braveheart français : un personnage charismatique, de grandes batailles, un enjeu très important.
Entre les mains d’un réalisateur et d’une équipe de talent, il y aurait de quoi faire un putain de grand film, qui plairait même au-delà des frontières françaises.

Mais bon, dans le monde d’aujourd’hui, représenter un catholique repoussant à coups d’épée des barbares du désert serait considéré comme un film d’extrême droite, et aurait beaucoup de mal à trouver les financements nécessaires à la réalisation d’un film à très gros budget.

Heureusement, l’IA est là, et j’espère qu’elle nous permettra, dans les années qui viennent, lorsqu’elle aura encore progressé, de narrer enfin ce glorieux moment de l’histoire de mon pays.

Il Parlamento europeo ha approvato la risoluzione su una strategia Ue contro ll’influenza della rete dei Fratelli Musulmani. Il testo chiede al Consiglio di valutare se persone ed entità legate alla Fratellanza (non solo le strutture formali, ma anche associazioni di facciata, canali finanziari, reti giovanili e figure di coordinamento) vadano inserite nella lista Ue delle organizzazioni terroristiche.
Tra i punti principali:
