If we paused and imagined those same resources redirected, what kind of society could we create instead?
Lately I’ve been thinking about trade-offs. Not just what we spend on, but what we give up in the process. When governments invest massive sums in war, what futures are we quietly deciding not to build? What would you choose to invest in if those resources were redirected?
Military spending is often framed as necessary — and sometimes it is. But it’s also one of the most expensive tools we have, financially and humanly.What we rarely do is weigh it against alternatives. Not abstractly, but concretely: what else could those billions fund?
