Doubtful that moment was the start of their friendship breakdown. I think they both share culpability.

I agree the rhetoric could definitely be toned down, but I think the reliance on force is circumstantial. Trump faces significantly more resistance from sanctuary cities than Obama did, many of which refuse to cooperate with his administration. That lack of coordination creates a more chaotic environment, which in turn escalates the need for a stronger enforcement response.
