Reminds me of an oil company that I worked for in Chad called EnCana.

Their primary community relations program was to build schools in the areas we worked in & they did. They funded 6 x 2 room school houses made of concrete with proper foundations & roofs that could withstand the rainy season.

After some pushback from the communities, they provided all the desks, chairs, blackboards etc needed.

When I was touring some Calgary based executives around, they wanted to do a photo op at one of the schools…I made a few excuses but they were adamant so off we went.

The desks & chairs had been turned into fire wood, the building was being used to store & turn wood into charcoal. When the executives asked why no schools were running, the answer was simple, these small villages worked to survive, including the children & there was no money for books, no money to pay or house a teacher so they used the building for something practical & useful. They were very appreciative, the executives were dumbfounded. Welcome to Chad was all I could come up with.

I worked in 38 African countries & at least 2 dozen more in the rest of the world that have Gov funded NGO’s running hundreds of programs like this & gov’s never learn the lesson because they are able to keep their shareholders (taxpayers) in the dark. 😎
