HR laughed. “Why? So you can beg for your job back?”

I smiled. “No. So you can explain to him why you fired the woman he personally hired.”

The room went quiet.

HR picked up the phone.

“Sir, there’s been a termination—”

The CEO interrupted.

“Who did you fire?”

HR mentioned my name.

There was a long silence.

Then the CEO said, “Put her on the phone.”

I took the phone.

“Hello, sir.”

He sighed.

“Please don’t leave the building. I’m on my way.”…….
