Look at who benefits from accepting a manslaughter plea.

The defendant avoids a full murder trial, the system avoids detailed scrutiny of the decisions that put him there, and the political class avoids awkward questions about asylum vetting and monitoring.

A full contested murder trial would drag into daylight the chain of Home Office approvals, local authority placements, mental health assessments, police contact and community reports. Manslaughter on “diminished responsibility” keeps the blame safely individualised.

It turns a policy failure into a story of one man’s illness. It ensures we talk about “psychotic episodes” instead of structural negligence, asylum screening, and the decision to place traumatised men in residential streets with minimal oversight.

If Westminster wanted to learn lessons, it would insist on maximum transparency, maximum scrutiny, and a public inquiry into these cases.

Instead, it quietly narrows the legal focus and leaves the rest of us to join the dots from the outside.
