@realdeadbeat@wariocolosseum Not sure about the economics, but doing an Engineering PhD in AI. A lot of the business ppl involved are the issues. Researchers and actual experts are begging the ppl in charge to focus on human centred workflows for a lot of important reasons outside of the money/job security
@2016archive@hellspatisserie Unfortunately not really, doing a PhD in engineering, funding is mostly given by governments or university provided scholarships, not many private scholarships funded by a patron only a university
@lowerformofwit There’s active research into this with the UK in UCL under the criminology departments and the CDT if you’re interested in where it may be going
@clarkentamine@thompson_paddy It’s doubly concerning as when economy goes bad PhDs look good (solid work for 4 years) so 2008 had great levels, with similar situation rn we’ve terrible numbers. It’s v concerning for long term effects of Irish universities - things will get very bad imo
@clarkentamine@thompson_paddy Engineering is genuinely in a very bad place, chemistry, medicine and biological spaces too. Out of my year if ~350 I’m the only PhD and I’m doing it in the UK, very few PhDs and the few that are doing them are doing them abroad
@clarkentamine@thompson_paddy Not really, I’m doing a PhD and there’s a massive crisis with very very very few Irish students staying to do further education. Very serious concern that Irish academic community in certain fields is going to die out. That’ll massive fuck up universities in time
@LadyJishere@ryannnnnoly@ThePopFlop But again we’re not discussing that, you’re changing your thesis cause your can’t hold up your argument lmao. She’s bad for business and is no longer welcome, it’s not that complex.
@BreezyyBarbie@ryannnnnoly@ThePopFlop She’s not a major couture client and she’s a brand liability, it doesn’t matter if JW Anderson loves her, she’s ruined her optics and is bad business. This shouldn’t be that hard to understand.
@BreezyyBarbie@ryannnnnoly@ThePopFlop Disagree. She’s not a major client of a house and doesn’t have the money to sponsor anything the MET wants. So she’d only be invited for branding, and no fashion house wants MAGA branding. There is a double standard I agree, but she’s paying for her actions 🤷♂️
@LadyJishere@ryannnnnoly@ThePopFlop Right but we’re not talking about race religion etc. so that’s a bad faith argument. She said something unpopular with the fashion/art industry and now is dealing with it. Freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences.
@Reginald434301@drterrysimpson Also not true, most of my profs are UK, French, other EU. It’s quite clear the US is not reliable and offers from EU groups is much more valuable.
Also anti Americanism in a country that literally built half of America is crazy.
@Reginald434301@drterrysimpson I’m Ireland so English isn’t an issue. We all dropped our offers. All my prof’s advised us to turn down US offers in favour of ETH, Cambridge etc. it’s a very bad look if we’re considering turning them down and it’ll snowball :/
@Reginald434301@drterrysimpson I mean myself and multiple friends recieved PhD offers for Ivy Leagues but are not going cause we’re nervous. Instead sticking to EU institutions. This will be the case a lot more
@dancingofpens I say to try and up share value, layoffs have a quarter with insane profits, share go up, AI will replace workers, this isn’t true and then they’re fucked.
Has already happened to some companies who are now trying to rehire ppl after doing this :/
