Former India captain Kapil Dev on Monday called for former Pakistan prime minister and legendary cricketer Imran Khan to be given the best possible treatment in prison, while also backing young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal amid criticism over his altercation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando.

Kapil said he did not want to comment on Pakistan's laws but urged the authorities to ensure basic facilities and humane treatment for Imran.

"We don't know the law of the country, that's fine. But humility and simple giving the facilities to a prisoner, whoever may be. And he was a former prime minister of the country and a top cricketer of the world," Kapil said.

"We want he should get the best treatment, what we are asking for. We are not asking for anything else, we are not asking for any replies, we are requesting," he added.

On the criticism surrounding Jaiswal's heated exchange with Fernando, Kapil said players have different personalities but cricket boards must ensure they do not cross the line.

"That's his way, that's his way. It's fine, every player has his own character. If that's the way he wants to play, good luck to him," he said.
