Criticising the government is a democratic right. Filthy, abusive expletives aimed at the individual occupying the office are not.
The office of the Prime Minister deserves respect, irrespective of who occupies it.
The Gen Z protesters who mistook profanity for courage & proudly did it on camera are soon going to discover that their language is going to have consequences.
We can blame Gen Z all we want ..

Now the question is: will we hold elected reps to the same standard? Some (recent incident in at a hospital in Dombivli) have been caught on camera using the very language we are condemning today. Let the consequences (if any) faced by the culprit set a precedent… let’s be fair in calling out profanity no matter whose mouth it’s coming out from.
If those in power model profanity, they shouldn't be surprised when the next generation imitates it.

Before we get into making a safe examination system, @NandanNilekani must examine the need for any entrance exam. Most exams are territorial power centres and business opportunities.

Take for example CUET. It is the most unnecessary examination Imposed on the hapless Delhi students that made the CBSE scores useless and killed school education. This was done to neutralise the AAP investment in government schools a waste. These kids cannot afford private coaching and a state topper is also denied a seat.

Similarly, NEET is useless for those who want to join a private medical college. The price differential (5 lacs and 1.5 crores) is so huge that at rank 30,000 all government colleges close their admission while even at rank 13 lac, private colleges are unable to fill seats. Private colleges are reserved for the rich 1% of India. If you indeed fighting against reservation and for meritocracy, shouldn’t you include this?

The TET, even JEE advanced, UGC NET etc can be modified to make it a test for those who don’t cross a certain level of education.

We must reduce the entrance exams. We must reduce the number of students who should take the exam. Increase the eligibility. For Ex: Make 80% in boards a qualification to get into all India institutions like AIIIMS, IITs etc. Make school education mandatory. Punish those in dummy schools. Hedge. De-risk. Spread.

Make sure that a 3 hour exam doesn’t become the life altering exam. It will reduce stress. Reduce suicides. The business of entrance exams has to be reformed before we reform the conduct of such exams.

What Anupam Kher says here about the abusive language used to defame Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past couple weeks is absolutely spot-on.

What he fails to mention is that this disrespectful language against the head of government is a direct outcome of the words used by BJP supporters like Mr Kher himself to describe not just opposition leaders, but also aam janata who have expressed dissatisfaction with the government in the past, or spoken about issues that don’t align with right wing ideology.

It’s cool to say “dissent is essential to a democracy” now that it’s clear we can’t just will it away, but similar - even well-meaning - dissent has been crushed as “anti national” in the past.

Many women and men have had to pay the price of such false equivalence and labelling, including prison time, social media trolling, etc, only because their opinions didn’t align with BJP supporters. Authors, educationists, economists, social reformers, opposition leaders, film stars - even journalists - have been at the receiving end of vile abuse and bullying on mainstream news channels and social media for over a decade now. These are people who’ve merely wanted to engage in dialogue. BE HEARD.

We can’t suddenly start airing our apprehensions about the state of democracy in a country when we have ourselves laid down the framework for a reality to exist where naysayers are vilified, and sycophancy is celebrated. This is how deep-rooted resentment sets in and that resentment takes the form of anger over time, which is what we’ve seen an outpouring of during last week’s historic protests.

So while Mr Kher is right about the standard of discourse, this is what Gen Z and Gen Alpha have seen play out before them in the most formative years of their lives, and this is what they’ve, unfortunately, inherited. If we want people to behave better, we must set better examples ourselves first.

1. सोनम वाङ्चुक यांनी उपोषण नसतं केलं तर आंदोलनाला प्रतिसाद नसता मिळाला. अनेक दिवस आंदोलनाकडे फार कोणी फिरकल नाही. वाङ्चुक यांची तब्येत बिघडल्यावर 'अरे माणूस मरतोय पण हे सरकार साधं बोलत नाही' अशी भावना जोर धरू लागली. मग एकेक जण व्यक्त व्हायला लागला.

2. सोनम यांच्याशी न बोलणं ही पाहिली चूक..वाङ्चुक याना उचलणं ही दुसरी चूक. सरकार डायरेक्ट उचलून नेत पण संवाद साधत नाही ही मग्रुरी आहे असं परसेप्शन तयार झालं. यानंतर तसा आंदोलनाला चेहरा नव्हता. स्वतः अभिजित उपोषण 1 दिवसाच्या वर नाही करू शकला. पण लोकं संतप्त होते.

3. सरकारची तिसरी घोडचूक म्हणजे लाठीचार्ज...यानंतर संवादाने जे प्रश्न सुटू शकतात त्यासाठी सरकार विद्यार्थ्यांना रक्तबंबाळ करतं अशी धारणा तयार झाली. त्यामुळे आंदोलन सरकारनेच पेटवल.लहान मुला मुलींना मारल्याने प्रत्येकाला भूमिका घेणं भाग पडलं. इथेच सरकार चेकमेट झालं.

या असंतोषाचा नंतर चेहरा अभिजित दीपके झाला. वाङ्चुक crucial role निभावून गेले.

Sachin Tendulkar has finally spoken on the student protests, and I had to read his note twice: once as a fan and once as an editor. The fan was disappointed, but the editor realised that this was a textbook specimen of the kind of writing that George Orwell warned about in his essay “Politics and the English Language”.

The essay was written in 1946, but it might well have been written yesterday about this very statement. Orwell’s point was that when people want to hide something, they stop using plain words and reach instead for the passive voice, for fog, for phrases that sound like they mean something while meaning nothing at all.

Consider the line, where students are disappointed that “their hard work hasn’t been rewarded”. Rewarded by whom, and denied by whom? There was a paper leak, which means somebody leaked it, some institution failed to prevent it, and an official presides over that institution. Yet none of them appears in the statement, and neither does the leak itself. A crime with identifiable custodians has been turned into something that simply happened to lakhs of children through nobody's fault.

Then comes the list of those who must set things right: parents, teachers, friends, relatives, schools and administrators. If you read that list again slowly, you will notice it covers everyone in India except the people the students are actually protesting against, which is to say the NTA, the education ministry and the government. When everyone is responsible, nobody is, and that is not an accident of drafting. It was engineered to deflect blame.

There is also a quiet sentence buried in the middle. “A society which prioritises outcomes over effort will seek shortcuts over meritocracy” is a line about those who take shortcuts, meaning the cheat. So a note on protests around paper leaks ends up gently lecturing the leaked-upon about honesty. His father’s lovely lesson—that failure is okay but cheating is not—is again aimed squarely at individuals, while the scandal and protests right now are about institutions that failed them.

The rest of the statement is what Orwell called ready-made strips of words, glued together. Full of dreams and energy, fuel to our success, safeguard their aspirations. Nobody can disagree with any of it, which is precisely the point, for this is prose engineered so that no one in power will find a single sentence to object to.

What an actual position would have looked like is a single sentence in the active voice: The government must find and punish those who leaked the paper, and fix the system that allowed it. He wrote 160+ words to avoid writing that one.

Yes how schools are structured financially today is very interesting.

Once when researching this I found out - promoters of schools often hold the land and infrastructure in a holding company. Sometimes even the trademark IP of the school is held by the holding entity.

The non-profit that runs in he school pays the holding entity lease/rent and royalty. Further more entities manage all expenses as vendors. It's crazy how literally just what is mandated - salary of principal and minimum required teachers and some educational related expenses is paid from the actual non-profit. Everything else is routed through promoter held entities.

No wonder PEs are investing - this is a perpetual money printer.
