I sit in Parliament listening to these ministers, and it’s all just so depressing - the vast majority of them have never run a business, and it SHOWS. You would not believe how bad it is.

They think ‘work’ means turning up to an office between 9 and 5, answering a few emails, and going home at the end of the day. Nice lunch break, few coffees away from the desk, probably a smoking break or several. It doesn’t - not for the millions of men and women who actually create the wealth that funds the state.

Running a small business isn’t a job. It’s a way of life. It is life. It’s 24/7/365. It’s relentless. You are the accountant, HR department, compliance officer, cleaner, marketer, and customer service team - all in one. There’s no sick pay, no safety net, and no taxpayer-funded pension waiting for you.

Holiday? Good luck. If you do manage to get away, it’s checking the phone all day, every day. Wife/husband obviously getting pissed off. We’ve all been there...

It’s all on you. Every invoice chased, every tax deadline met, every bit of red tape navigated is on you. And if you make one mistake, one error, one small slip-up, the state comes after you - in a relentlessly efficient manner that is never afforded to us when we ask questions of it.

Most MPs have no idea what that feels like. They just don’t. We’re going to see more of this in the budget I’m sure. More hurt. More pain. More tax. They don’t get it.

They don’t understand that when a small business owner gets hit with another tax, it’s not absorbed by a ‘budget’ - it’s taken straight out of their family’s pocket.

There is no ‘deficit’ in the business world - that’s called going bust.

And they certainly don’t understand what real risk looks like. Politicians can vote through a policy on Monday and forget it by Tuesday - a small business owner lives with the consequences of that policy for years, decades. The MP monthly salary is safe. It always has been. In the public sector before, and in the public sector after - if not that, some charity/NGO funded entirely by the public sector.

GET A REAL JOB.

If MPs actually spent a week running a small firm - paying suppliers, tackling VAT, navigating health and safety law, sorting out HR issues, chasing clients for payment, trying to expand while staying compliant with everything from GDPR to local planning regulations - they’d legislate very differently. I can promise you that.

They’d realise that most of Britain’s problems could be solved by the state doing less, not more.

Cutting tax. Simplifying regulation. Slashing back the HRification of the country. Trusting people who actually produce things to get on with it.

Instead, we have a political class that talks endlessly about ‘growth’ while brutally punishing the only people capable of delivering it - especially going after the family businesses/farms, which is a particularly spiteful policy decision.

Small business owners are people who work harder than almost anyone in Parliament could imagine - and who are treated worse for it.

Britain’s small businesses don’t succeed because of politicians, they survive in spite of them.

Take no lectures from these weasel politicians who understand NOTHING about how a small business operates - I sit there listening to Starmer, Reeves and the other gnomes in Parliament. Honestly, it's scary.

It's worse in person. They do not get it. They just don't. You can see it in their eyes. Rabbits in the headlights, but at least the rabbits don't know their own stark limitations.

They've all had cosy jobs, almost always in the public sector or enormous corporates. The ministers, not the rabbits.

No fear, no risk, no jeopardy.

They get their days off, their pensions, their protections. It's all safe and secure, nothing can possibly go wrong.

That is NOT what it's like out in the real world. Businesses go bust, people lose money, they can lose everything in fact.

That's all being made SO much worse by this Government and their offensive attitude to small businesses. It STINKS.

I hate it, honestly. It drives me mad.

It's all just numbers and statistics to the politicians.

More tax, more regulation, more paperwork, more costs - they have absolutely no understanding of the human cost of what they are doing to the economy.

It is brutal.

They're all off now for the summer, back in September. How wonderful.

Small business owners don't have that luxury. Maybe a long weekend away somewhere, but the phone's always on and the stress is still there. The relentless worry.

I want to live in a country that celebrates and releases its small businesses. That gets out of their way, that backs them and embraces them.

That used to be Britain. It's certainly not now.

We need a total rethink of how our small businesses are treated by Government.

Starting with a bit of respect.

Starting and running a business in 2025 Britain - let’s walk through it.

You’ve got a good idea, managed to save a few quid to invest and want to give it a go. Let’s say it’s a cafe.

Generate wealth, create jobs and contribute to your local economy. Great idea. You just picked the wrong country to do it in.

Registering the damn thing is complicated enough, and that’s the easy bit. Next up is the bank account? You’re treated like a criminal and it takes week - opening a cafe, not a terrorist cell.

You manage to find a premise, good location. Oh, it costs a fortune. Rent through the roof and you’re forced to pay thousands to the council. For what? The filthy high street? The rapid customer service? Hmm. Yet another rip off. Inspections are a nightmare, it’s never-ending bureaucracy from people who have never created anything in their lives.

But somehow you get it off the ground and things go well. You need to expand, hire someone.

Ouch. PAYE, national insurance, pensions, HR policies, health and safety risk assessments. One wrong step and you’re facing an employment tribunal. Is it even worth the risk?

It’s becoming more and more expensive, and risky, to hire people? Why bother?

Maybe you try and get independent contracted help. Ah. IR35 puts a stop to that. We wouldn’t want any flexibility now, would we? That would make too much sense.

Your accountants already cost an absolute fortune. They’re bleeding you dry just so you comply with the layers and layers of regulations.

But let’s say it’s gone well, and your hard work is paying off. Turnover hits £90k. The dreaded VAT threshold.

That means if you essentially then have to start charging VAT. That means everything gets 20% more expensive for your customers. Or you are forced to absorb the costs. Or you deliberately make less money to stay below the threshold. Just brilliant.

Maybe you want to keep the cafe open later? Serve some alcohol? Have some music on?

More licences. More costs. More inspections. More bureaucracy. Why bother?

Waste collection even costs a fortune. Remind me, why are you already paying the council? You try and ring the council, you’re on hold for 30 minutes. Brilliant. Customers are waiting. You finally speak to someone. They’re rude, and haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. They promise they’ll get back to you, but they only work four days a week and on Thursday they’re working from home. No answer, you have to chase and chase and chase.

Incompetence reigns.

Right. We’ve got through all of that, now you want to pay yourself? Not unreasonable is it? For working 16 hour days to get the business off the ground?

Corporation tax slices your profit down. Maybe there’s some left. Dividend allowance has been cut, so there’s less to take there. Tax rates are up too. Hmm. Okay, well let’s take a small salary and some dividends. Maybe you’ve got student debt too which takes a large chunk?

It is brutal.

Even making money costs money. It costs to deposit, it costs to accept card payments.

No holiday, no protection, no respect. All risk, and you’re treated like dirt by the Government.

You look at it all and just think, why bother? Why not work for the public sector as some irrelevant bureaucrat obstructing everyone else? Get 60k, 35 days holiday and you can literally never be sacked. What’s the point? Why take the risk? Just do that instead.

We desperately need to back British enterprise. Reward those who take all of the risk. And actually, support local businesses where we all can.

We should be slashing corporation tax, doubling the VAT threshold, increasing personal allowances, abolishing business rates for high street small firms, reducing national insurance contributions, cutting tax on salary/dividends, brutalising red tape and PLENTY more.

If you do these things, you will generate MORE tax revenue. It is really not a complicated principle. Does Reeves understand that? No. The woman is clueless. Absolutely clueless. She does NOT understand what she is forcing on business owners. Let’s see if she can run our cafe for a week. Absolutely NO chance.

I’m with the men and women who build businesses, create wealth, and generate opportunities.

They have my full respect. The politicians running our country certainly do not.

My message to our cafe owner? Keep plugging away, it will get better.

Please know that at least one MP is fighting for you in Westminster.
