🇸🇾 Syria → Mesamia

The changes are present in the Japanese version of the anime, and similar substitute fictionalized countries have appeared in previous GITS adaptations as well

Notably, the Latin American Spanish dub retains the original references, with dub director Daniel Lacy stating that the decision was made to stay faithful to the manga

Following the ill-advised decision to discontinue support for the Google Earth desktop application and to redirect users to the less functional online version, we are witnessing yet another misstep by Google with far-reaching consequences.

The fight against engagement farmers, disinformation campaigns, and adversarial actors seeking to influence public discourse is already an immense challenge. Satellite imagery has long served as a critical benchmark in countering disinformation and verifying claims, and Google Earth was one of the most important tools in this effort.

It is with great concern that we are already observing individuals exploiting the new Google Earth web tool to make military positions, relabel buildings as schools,... and experiment with manipulating the information environment. In effect, users can now fabricate or alter satellite-derived visuals to support false narratives.

The primary, and perhaps only, practical use of this tool appears to be the creation and dissemination of mis- and disinformation. Users can fabricate scenes or objects that do not exist, or alter real locations to depict false realities, and then distribute these manipulated visuals online as if they were authentic.

Fact-checkers may soon find themselves verifying Google satellite imagery using...Google satellite imagery, rather than fact-checking the original claims.

As some experienced geolocators have noted: “We just realized that geolocators are going to have to waste time geolocating fake Google Earth images now to debunk disinformation. This is fucking chaos.”

We urge @Google to reconsider this decision.

@googleearth should aid the global effort against dis- and misinformation, not inadvertently enable it.

ONLINE XENOPHOBIA IN MALAYSIA IS COMPLETELY OFF THE SCALE!

Check this X post. A perfect example of this.

On the left, “Malaysian” is presented as clean, smiling, colourful, respectable multiculturalism. “Not Malaysian” is represented by poor, dark-skinned, displaced-looking people with tired children. So the line is not really about citizenship. It is about class, race, poverty and who gets to look like they belong.

The idea is to sanitise racism as patriotism.

So Malaysia’s diversity is celebrated when it is useful for tourism posters and national branding. But the moment vulnerable migrants or refugees enter the picture, the same society suddenly discovers borders, disgust and moral panic.

The people being marked as “not Malaysian” here are not a threat to civilisation. Many are fleeing genocide, dispossession and hunger. And for that, they are turned into a visual warning - do not let “them” contaminate “us”. That is not love of country. It is fear of the poor but dressed up as national pride.

The racist petition page demanding the “removal” of #Rohingya refugees from #Malaysia is now down and marked as under review. Good - but it should shame everyone who built, signed and amplified it that it took this long.

This was never “public concern”. It was a mass campaign to make a persecuted, stateless people disappear from Malaysian life. Its organisers tried to disguise bigotry through the language of resources, crime and national security, as if a few polite policy words could disguise the cruelty at its centre.

A petition does not become less racist because it has hundreds of thousands of signatures. It becomes more dangerous. It invites people to mistake numerical force for moral authority. @Change was right to step in. Now the petition should be removed permanently.

What is striking is not only the demand, but the language around it. It is aboutresources, security, public order, “humane solutions”, third-country resettlement.
