STATEMENT ON THE ABDUCTION OF ALEX KIPROTICH

The KANU Party strongly condemns the brazen and disturbing abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich last night.

This is not an isolated incident that can be dismissed with the usual assurances and expressions of concern. In June this year, Mr. Kiprotich survived an attempted abduction and reported the matter at Menengai Police Station. No action was taken whatsoever to find those responsible for the criminality.

Therefore, it must be stated in no uncertain terms that the abduction of a journalist is a direct assault on media freedom and the rule of law. We reject, in all its manifestations, the attempt to normalize intimidation, unlawful detention or abduction of journalists for speaking truth to power.

Indeed, no person should be subjected to arbitrary detention or simply made to disappear. Abduction cannot be an instrument of law enforcement. It is a violation of the law.

We, therefore, demand a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into both the latest abduction and the earlier reported attempt at Menengai Police Station. Those found culpable must be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Media freedom is not a concession from those in power but a constitutional right, and protecting it is an obligation of every institution entrusted with public authority.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has postponed all Kenyan Premier League Round One matches that were scheduled to be played between Monday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

In a communication to clubs, the federation’s Leagues and Competitions Department said the postponement will allow for further deliberations between FKF, participating clubs and the league sponsors on the management of the 2026/27 season.

“This is so as to allow for deliberations between the Federation, participating Clubs and the League sponsors that will provide direction and guidance on the management of the League for the upcoming Season,” part of the communication reads.»

FKF said the Round One fixtures, alongside the full-season schedule, will be communicated to clubs and other stakeholders “within the shortest time possible.”

The decision comes after growing uncertainty over the start of the new season following disagreements between FKF and clubs over the league’s commencement and applicable promotion and relegation regulations.
