Last Mile Connectivity
Today in Maralal, UNICEF, in partnership with local leaders and organizations, officially launched the Last Mile Connectivity in Schools (LMCS) initiative, funded by the European Union.
During the launch, County Commissioner Mr. John Cheruiyot emphasized the need to prioritize children’s development as outlined in Kenya’s Constitution and international commitments.
UNICEF Lodwar Zonal Chief Mr. Kipsang Rotuno and UNICEF Education Officer Ms. Margaret highlighted the initiative’s key goals: Expanding equitable access to ICT-enabled, inclusive, and quality education; Connecting remote schools to digital infrastructure; Enhancing digital literacy for learners and teachers; Supporting inclusive learning for children with disabilities; Building capacity among government, caregivers, and communities, and Promoting child protection, online safety, and climate awareness in digital learning.
Partners in Action include:
•Finn Church Aid (FCA): Expanding internet access in schools, creating digital hubs, establishing virtual labs, training teachers, and promoting online safety and mental health.
•Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) & The Action Foundation (TAF): Through the Pamoja Tusome initiative (Lego Braille Bricks), supporting visually impaired learners with Braille kits, training teachers, parents, and caregivers, and strengthening peer-learning networks.
•KUZA: Promoting climate-smart education by integrating resilience and environmental awareness into school programs.
With strong support from the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission, ICT Authority, NCPWD, State Department of Children Services, and Samburu County Government, this initiative is a significant step toward ensuring no child is left behind in the digital age.
Together, we are working to transform education and unlock opportunities for every child.
